Wholesale Forgeries in City Papers

An investigation by 40 police and Assistant District Attorney Daniel V. McIsaac into papers filed for City Council candidate Lewis J. Hewitt reveals about 98 percent of 4800 names are rank forgeries. Police Inspector Rooney questioned four stenographers at Hewitt’s Atlantic Print Works.

District attorney questions stenographers in ongoing case

Inspector Rooney held talks with two stenographers, Besie L. Balcom of Dorchester and Catherine C. Cooney of Newton Upper Falls, at the district attorney’s office. Balcom, employed by Hewitt for about three and a half years, said Hewitt checked papers as they came in. Cooney’s questioning by Assistant District Attorney McIsaac yielded no disclosed result. earlier in the day, John H. Rooney was involved in the proceedings.

Voter Fraud Probe In Roxbury Case Involves Hewitt Rooneys

Thomas V. Rooney and his wife were questioned by the assistant district attorney over a batch of voter papers they allegedly filed from Hewitt. Police in several districts canvass households to verify signatures while voters deny their names on the papers. Hewitt says 3000 names were genuine and he employed about 40 signers. handwriting will be checked by expert Hingston as the grand jury prepares next month to determine responsibility for fraud.

Rome dispatch reports the Italian government informed Ambassador Thomas Nelson Page that Miss Dorothy A. MacVane daughter of Professor Silas M. MacVane of Boston has not been under police surveillance for several days and will not face further surveillance according to instructions.

More Light in Art Museum Keeps Saturdays Open Later

Express Saved By Derailment Switch Near Joliet

A Chicago bound express on the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific railroad was saved from a head on collision with a runaway freight train near Joliet Illinois today by automatic derailment equipment. The freight airbrakes failed and the train ran past signals before the derailment switch threw, sending the runaway into a ditch and allowing the passenger train to pass unharmed.
