Ezra Ripley Thayer, dean of Harvard Law School, had his nomination as associate justice of the Supreme Judicial Court sent to the Governor's Council by Governor Foss to replace Judge J. M. Morton, who resigned but had refused the post.
A friend says Governor Peters erred in nominating Dean Thayer after he repeatedly refused the post. Thayer confirms he cannot accept due to duties at the law school and notes his prior statements of refusal. He traces his education from Cambridge High to Harvard and outlines career from clerk to dean. His home is 77 Bay State Road with a summer residence in Hingham.
Boston Mayor Fitzgerald quits the mayoral contest on medical advice. He cites a need for prolonged rest after overwork and illness. Acting Mayor Kenny is expected to be favored as his successor, with confirmation of the political shift anticipated in subsequent pages.
Postmaster General Burleson urges Congress to place all telecommunication lines under federal control citing demonstrated capability of the postal service to run public utilities. City Hall assessors report nineteen acres of downtown Boston with land valued at 78 million dollars and total real estate at 90.6 million. Experts say Boston real estate may exceed assessed value by 25 to 50 percent. London’s best sixteenth of land sold for about 50 million.
Fresno Dan, named to receive 350 from the William C. Russell will, did not appear at yesterday's probate hearing in Cambridge or at the Russell mansion in Melrose. He reportedly returned to New York, having spent no money in Melrose since taking up residence there. Executor Ferdinand B. Almy refused to comment. Love letters continued to arrive for him.
Haverhill marks the 106th anniversary of John Greenleaf Whittier the Quaker poet. Public school pupils observed the day and the Whittier Club held its annual meeting.
Pursuit by a high powered car aimed at catching a thief before he boarded a train to Canada resulted in Harvey Blackford 35 of 71 Mountain Street Winthrop being struck in Charlestown near the railroad terminal and possibly killed.
Raymond Waters aged 17 of 60 Clark Street Everett is believed to have fled on the 6:22 p m train for Canada with 65 dollars stolen from the John T Connor store at 293 Main Street Everett. His father Albert Waters and Officer J C Killian were in the car with John McConnell Jr whose father is grocery firm vice president. McConnell was detained at Station 15 Charles Town awaiting word on the victim's condition at the Relief station.
Irving C Perry prominent in the paper manufacturing field with Charles E Perry and Sons died at his Dorchester home at 10 o clock last night from pneumonia.

Dec 17 Alammee a 10-year-old son Paul heard his home on fire upon returning from school. Mrs Mary Talian visiting a neighbor rushed through smoke and flames and smashed a glass door with her bare hands to save her sleeping 4-year-old Crecourt in the Rayssian block at High and Essex streets.
Mrs Talian entered a burning tenement and shielded the baby with her skirts. She sustained severe burns as she fought through flames and smoke to reach the stairs. Her son Paul summoned help, and police led rescuers to the unconscious mother and child. The fire gutted the home with extensive losses.
Premier Asquith opened direct communication with Lord Lansdowne and Andrew Bonar Law on home rule negotiations. Earlier efforts involved Churchill and Austen Chamberlain with no agreement reached. The direct invitation signals another step in the talks.
