Monkeys and parrots afloat as Montrose reaches port
The British steamer Montrose arrived in harbor with 52 monkeys 36 parrots 17 canaries seven black squirrels four cockatoos three Chinese chow dogs and 10 Japanese spaniels from Singapore 129 jungle inhabitants aboard chief engineer David Treasurer’s odd collection. Several animals died during the Atlantic voyage and a black squirrel leaped from the mast and fell overboard during rough seas. Seasickness and cold intensified the beasts’ discomfort but the Montrose pressed on as the crew coped with the unusual shipboard menagerie.

Libel Suit Lost by Salem Police Captain
