Wheeler urges united backing for Wilson era regulatory program

Harry A. Wheeler president of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States urged Boston business and commercial interests at the Copley Plaza banquet last night to support the federal administration regulatory program. He defended a currency bill and called for organized business power to back railroad industrial and financial legislation.

Regulation and banking in push for co operation with Congress

President Wheeler urged regulation of railroads and commerce as inevitable and said cooperation with Congress and state legislatures would guide reform. He supported the currency bill, noting imperfections can be fixed later, while Boston Chamber of Commerce President Coolidge outlined the year’s program and a banquet to discuss welfare needs and chamber aid. New Police Department Rules Issued By Commissioner

Police Commissioner Stephen O Meara releases a 300 page manual outlining new rules for officers. Prohibits uniformed officers at political rallies unless on duty and bans non department cars for police business. Commands civil conduct and forbids visible gum or tobacco. Officers must explain lawfulness to citizens and assist reporters when feasible.

Tannery Fire Devastates Woburn Plant With $200,000 Loss

A December fire at the Cottle Leather Company tannery, occupied by the G H Forbush Company, caused extensive damage estimated at 200000. Explosions of naptha and oil lit the night as Woburn firefighters fought the blaze with help from Winchester and Wakefield amid false alarms and wild rumors.

Fire at Oil-Soaked Tannery Destroys Plant

At about 6 15 p m superintendent William H McGowan bookkeeper James Martin and watchman Michael Lilley in the office of the factory saw sprinklers engage a fierce blaze in the main building. The wooden tannery soaked with oil exploded as naptha and chemicals burned forcing nine firemen to abandon the roof. Help from Winchester Wakefield arrived and flames spread through the four story frame structure with multiple additions before collapse. The scene continued on page 10 fifth column.

Telephone Girls Urge Votes at Boston Suffrage Rally

At Faneuil Hall a Boston Equal Suffrage Association meeting urged wage earning women to vote. Miss Annie Malloy led speakers from seven industries including Margaret Fitzgerald and Annie Burke, linking voting to a national minimum wage and protections for youth in schools and mills.

Villa Decrees Seizure of Terrazas and Creel Estates

General Villa orders the confiscation of all property belonging to Luis Terrazas Sr Enrique Creel and Juan Creel in Mexico. A Jibati despatch says Emperor Menelik of Abyssinia died Friday. Born in 1844, he has been reported dead on several occasions. Addis Abeba dispatches last February announced his death and the succession of Prince Lidi Jeassu, a grandson.
