Trade reciprocity sparks party divisions in Congress

Washington dispatch reports Erastus Wiman pressing for Canadian reciprocity before adjournment, warning it could boost Liberal Canada in elections. Republicans on Ways and Means and Speaker Reed resist, arguing Hitt’s resolution offers little substance amid tariff strictness. General Patrick A. Collins appears in Washington with allies.

Prospects of the Copyright Bill in Senate Passage

The international copyright bill seems likely to pass the Senate this session if Senator Hoar yields on the force bill. Platt will call it up, with Seller in charge, and both parties anticipate a majority vote. Democratic leader Gray and others see support growing as opposition to cheap-book buyers wanes and printer and author protections gain favor.

Kennard Nomination For Sub Treasurer Quietly Planned

The Boston sub treasurer nomination for Mr Kennard was expected today but not discussed by the President. The House delegation had little consultation with Senators on appointments, with emphasis on securing a man who could provide a proper bond rather than political gains. Representatives showed little interest or earnest candidate pursuit in the matter.

Straws From State Street Markets Report

The New York market was dull yet firmer as foreign hints hinted at easier money in Berlin and no Bank of England rate rise. Railroads face pressure from Western presidents toward a new agreement while Jacksonville plans a large steel plant. London and Paris financiers discuss Rio Tinto bonds and Rock Island dividends loom in the background.

Strauss Kinley and Co Shoddy Factory Closes

Braintree on December 17 reports Strauss Kinley and Co have shut their shoddy wool factory. The firm produced a superior grade of shoddy wool from imported raw material. The McKinley tariff hike from 10 to 30 cents per pound blocked imports, effectively embargoing them and forcing the business to close.

Petition on Harvard athletic limits to New England province

A Bostonian graduate letter to the editor protests Harvard’s plan to confine athletic contests to New England. The writer argues the rule harms Harvard’s national standing, strains relations with the Middle States and Southern neighbors, and urges the university to revise the restriction to avoid provincialism.
