Matteawan Safe Arrives in New York After Nord Sea Voyage

The Lone Star steamer Matteawan finally reaches New York at 10 am amid earlier alarms over a fire in cargo cotton and a broken main shaft. Temporary repairs were made at sea and a new shaft will be installed before the ship departs again for Boston. The vessel, built in 1898, carries 2499 tons net and 301 tons gross with a cargo valued around 225000.

Star Chamber Hears Charge Against Officer Cleveland

The lice commissioners conducted a star chamber hearing on an assault claim against Officer Cleveland of Captain Wyman's division. A Harvard student and Boston Journal worker was allegedly struck with a club and fled. Captain Wyman testified Cleveland showed good regard as reporters and testimony were heard.

Burglary at Editor Buckley House in Cambridge

Police and Buckley describe a bold Cambridge burglary at the corner of Harvard and Inman streets. The intruder reportedly knew the house well and confronted Buckley in his chamber after entering through an exterior door. Buckley recalled waking to a revolver at his face and calmly noted the intruder’s features.

Trains Rescued as Drawbridge Collapse Delays Boston Travel

A drawbridge collapse near Kneeland Street stalled trains on the New York New Haven and Hartford line yesterday afternoon and evening. Workers repaired the structure through the night and service expected to resume this morning. No injuries were reported as Boston Elevated Railway cars assisted by rerouting passengers to South Boston and Dover routes.

Bad for Mrs Botkin in Dover poison case

In San Francisco on December 16 the defense faced a setback as Mrs Botkin stands accused of murdering Mrs Dunning and Mrs Deane of Dover Delaware by poisoned candy mailed to them. Grace Harris a saleswoman identified Botkin as the recipient of a cheap linen handkerchief sent for the little daughter and Rouf testified Botkin pointed to the same item and noted her handwriting on the anonymous letters to Mrs Dunning.

Hermit Esther Myers Dies in Westerly Fire

Esther Myers a 70 year old recluse who lived alone in a big farm house in Westerly was found burned to death after a fire consumed her home. The blaze started and was discovered by local boys breaking in the door to reach her body near the entrance. She had shunned neighbors for twenty years and owned land in the town center.

Married in Court House In Superior Criminal Court

William F. Folland aged 20 and Annie KE Entwistle were legally married in the district attorney’s office yesterday. The surprise ceremony occurred while Folland was a prisoner awaiting a criminal trial in which Entwistle was the chief witness. No bridesmaids or ushers attended.

Gavel Presented to A. O. H. Division 6 in Charlestown

Edward M. Shields brought a gavel from Santiago and presented it at the Charlestown A. O. H. Division 6 meeting. James J. Wren gave a speech as the gavel, formerly from the Spanish ship Maria Teresa, was taken off before it went out of commission.

Rubber Company Ball Dances At Clarendon Street Hall

Harvard Rubber Manufacturing Company employees held their first grand ball at Copley Hall Clarendon street with about seventy five attendees and fifty couples in line. The grand march opened at 9 80 showing Miss Annie Reynolds and Mr Morris Koff leading. Dancing continued until 2 am with guests from Stoughton American Norfolk Unicon and Co operative Rubber companies. Officers included Chief marshal Bernard Yaffe and assistants Harry Youngerman Morris Ginsburg Samuel Freeman Louis Miller.
