Schooner Abandoned On Middle Ground Shoal

The Boston schooner Charles Luling a 300 ton coal carrier from New York to Falmouth was abandoned by her crew on Middle Ground Shoal at Vineyard Haven. Captain Greenlaw feared she would flood by morning and his wife had been ashore earlier. The vessel fouled a mooring dragged anchor and grounded after a failed pull by the revenue cutter Acushnet. Built Manitowoc Wis 1873 she is owned by Boston Brokerage Company and measures 195 gross tons.

Student Volunteer Secretaries Arrive in Kansas City

Three young women secretaries of the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions arrived in Kansas City on December 14. Katharine Duffield of Wellesley College Eleanor L Cory of Smith College and Maude Kelsey of Vassar College travel ahead of the quadriennial meeting starting December 31.

Trap 10 in Cambridge Club Raid

A squad of 10 policemen led by Captain John J. McBride and Sergeant Thomas Rowe raided the Hendricks Club at Cambridge and Parnell streets East Cambridge seizing two wagon loads of men and three loads of gambling paraphernalia. Ten men from Boston Cambridge and Somerville were arrested for being present where gambling apparatus was found.

Police raid seizes Cambridge club property and arrests ten men

In a swift Cambridge street raid officers confiscated a piano tables cards chips and all club furniture and decorations. A large crowd booed as the operation unfolded. Ten men gave addresses at Station 3 and will appear in East Cambridge District Court this morning.

Mrs Maud Ballington Booth wife of the Volunteers of America commander preached at Charlestown State Prison becoming the first woman to serve as chaplain from the pulpit.
