A total of about 2000 men have been sent from regulars in four days as 500 more depart for Fort Slocum today. The volunteer enlistment deadline expired at 6 pm, leaving only a few hours until noon for remaining draft age volunteers to join coast artillery.
The Marine Corps and the Navy will accept applications until closing time tomorrow and will also shut down on schedule after the deadline.
The army reports its busiest season with hundreds examined daily and about 20 percent rejected. Navy offices and the Tremont Street center handle a flood of applicants while the navy yard sees the largest volume. The Marine Corps averages 10 men daily, a high figure for the force. Starting Monday only men not drafted may enlist in the three branches, all others barred.
