Chelsea Bridge Plan Proposes $5 Million Replacement
Plans submitted to Mayor Fitzgerald call for removing the present Chelsea bridges and erecting a new $5,000,000 span upstream. The bridge would run from Lexington street in Charlestown to the Naval Hospital area in Chelsea, with new streets linking to Chelsea Square and Washington Avenue. The project would shift traffic away from Chelsea street toward developing Revere Malden and nearby towns, with cost burdens shared among many communities, reducing Boston’s share to about one tenth. A temporary Chelsea North bridge would precede the permanent one, and a $10,000 loan for preliminary work was sent to the City Council.
