Alonzo W. Campbell shot and killed his wife Mabel W. Campbell at her parents home 44 Wyeth Street Malden yesterday afternoon then killed himself. The couple had been estranged for three months and had arranged a meeting with her father and his wife in an attempt to reconcile.
George Baklanoff noted baritone, a major opera star, was discharged yesterday by Henry Russell the director before the dress rehearsal of La Habanera. Russell says Baklanoff will be prevented from singing in major American opera houses. Baklanoff is regarded as second only to Amato among baritones.
A brief note states that Mr Russell confirms continued coverage or reference to M Baklanoff on page four third column, indicating ongoing discussion or profile in the newspaper.
In 14 Massachusetts cities yesterday elections produced few changes. No license vote shifts occurred and only Lynn saw a mayor fail to win re election under the new commission form. Elsewhere residents mainly voted for School Board members.
Of fourteen cities voting on licensing three favored licenses while eleven rejected. Four dry cities Lynn Newburyport Salem and Woburn were seen as at risk by temperance advocates, a perceived victory for the cause. Eight mayors sought re-election. seven won including Fletcher Meehan Fall Moore Burke Murray Logan. Rich in Lynn lost to Connery. New mayors Dodge Wasgat Taylor Adams Burns take office.
Frank Sara, 19, expressman for Bailey’s Lepress Company, was attacked by four armed men on a Linden to Maiden route near Lynn Street. They seized the wagon, searched his pockets, and struck him with a club, escaping with small change. He notified Malden police from Linden station.
Tide forecast and daily outlook show fair conditions across Boston and New England. Temperatures rise slowly with moderate to brisk west to southwest winds on Wednesday and Thursday.
