Politicians anticipate a very close race in Boston today as every candidate hopeful predicts victory. A candidate quoted says, I expect to be elected, with Dr Scannell, and shall work for the children's best interests.
A brief campaign statement from Republican James B. Magenis outlines his pledge to work for pupils if elected to the School Board. He asserts continual dedication and support from organized labor and cites his commitment as a school committee member.
Statements from Independence League and Republican factions claim Mayor Fitzgerald will win by large pluralities. One message promises best efforts as Mayor, another pledges defeat for Fitzgerald and Hibbard with a clean government, and a third asserts a 15,000 plurality for a square deal administration.
At midnight Mayor John F. Fitzgerald completed a five hour citywide tour, greeted by over 17 000 supporters. He spoke briefly at Ward 11 Democrogie HQ 40 Charles street and at Ward 10 HQ Dartmouth street, urging unity at the polls and inviting crowds to City Hall after voting.
Postmaster George A. Hibbard Republican mayoral candidate concluded his campaign with a series of last night rallies across the city. He spoke at venues including a Jewish synagogue Ward 20, the Non-Partisan Club Ward 12, St. Rose Hall Worcester street, St. Paul s Church Camden Tremont streets, Ward 6 and Paul Revere Hall Prince street addressing diverse communities. He urged voters that the issues are settled and the case is closed.
Goldfield mines to reopen Thursday with wage cuts and a ban on Western Federation of Miners. Up to 500 replacement workers to be brought in. governor to visit as troops guard the mines. Card system to be used. deserters from the federation expected to fill positions while AFL and affiliated unions may work.
Virgile Sylva, 17, died at City Hospital after being shot by Patrolman John Scott of Station 6 in South Boston early Sunday while fleeing from Benck's grocery store burglary. Police say the store had been broken into minutes before the confrontation.
After the medical examiner viewed the body, the remains were moved to Sylva's parents' home. Superintendent Pierce said no action would be taken against Patrolman Scott, who claimed the shooting was necessary in the line of duty as Sylva and three others broke into the store and refused to halt. Acting Lieutenant Hazlett echoed that no charges would follow, stating the fatal shot came during faithful duty.
Frederick J. Robinson senior partner of Robinson Bros. shortly a Malden manufacturer, died at his home from complications of diseases at age 70. A Taunton native, he lived much of his life in Malden and is survived by a widow, a brother and two sons.
The San Carlo company led by Henry Russell impressed Boston as La Gioconda drew an eager several-thousand crowd at the Majestic Theatre. Spectators lined Tremont Street for standing room only, with gallery tickets sold out late in the evening.
The crowd began to gather well before seats were filled, forming after six o'clock as anticipation built for the gathering praised by Mr Russell. Van Rensselaer was noted in attendance.
Clyde Loughlin aged 25 son of John Loughlin of Great Pond was shot and killed accidentally while hunting near Aurora Maine, about 23 miles from Ellsworth, when his rifle discharged. The incident occurred today.
Joseph Armstrong, longtime manager of the Christian Science Journal and publisher of Mrs. Eddy's books, died at his home on Huntington Avenue after a month with pulmonary troubles. About 68, he was a leading figure in the Christian Science church in Boston and beyond, a key defender in church litigation, and active in publishing church literature and defending the faith.
Washington announces the army will seek plans for a practical heavier than air aeroplane to replace balloons for military use. The signal officer will invite American inventors to submit designs while balloon training and dirigible projects continue.
Tuesday rain moves in with clearing overnight into Wednesday. Much colder by Wednesday with south to southwest winds turning brisk. Winds shift from west to northwest by Wednesday as the cold air settles over the area.

Boston prepares for its 79th city election costing about 21000 with 385000 ballots printed. Mayor Fitzgerald claims victory by 10000 votes while Hibbard predicts 12000 to 15000 and Coulthurst forecasts his own win as turnout nears 90000.
