Edward Cohen president of the State Branch American Federation of Labor lay in state for eight hours at Wells Memorial Hall after being shot by John A. Steele. About 10,000 people filed past the bier to pay respects to the slain leader.
Fire started by gasoline explosion in the stable behind 97 Addington Road in Brookline. Two prized horses perished, two cars and harnesses burned. loss estimated over $20,000. Chauffeur Frank Hart severely burned while trying to save the animals. Fire department responded after neighbor James Mackay alerted. Caroline Mackay, ill in bed, heard the blast and notified her parents. Continued on Page 9-First Column.
A crowd pursued and beat Joseph Merlo an Italian resident of 62 Shawmut Avenue after he allegedly set fire to a barn at 87 Warrenton Street a 2 1-2 story building. Officer McCreedy station 4 rescued him and a charge of incendiarism was filed. Merlo was beaten at the Temple Bridge as cries for lynching echoed amid other recent neighborhood fires including Shawmut Furniture Company.
A compiled roster lists numerous residents with street addresses across Roxbury, Charlestown, Dorchester, Mattapan, East Boston, Hyde Park, and surrounding areas. Names include Ernest T Curtis, Venson B Hatfield, Peter Grant, Angus McKay, Fred Cor rigan, Denis H McManus, Catherine Hardiman, Patrick Murphy, and many others along with their street details.
Mayor Fitzgerald found support from former foes Martin M. Lomasney and William S. McNary as they endorsed his re election. Their Democratic followers greeted him with cheers and applause yesterday.
City political scene buzzes as candidates anticipate a near record vote with Mayor Fitzgerald predicting 100000 ballots and experts expecting 95000 to cast ballots. Polls say turnout could set a municipal record while hotel clubs report peak election fever.

Thomas Murphy, 69, of Myrtle Street Dedham, a prominent figure in State Republican circles, died Saturday night at his home. He was an ex member of the Republican State committee, former chair of the Dedham Republican town committee, ex superintendent of streets and park commissioner. Survived by three sons T Monroe Murphy of West Roxbury, Edgar Murphy of New England Telephone, and Fred W. Murphy a lawyer. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
Virgile Silva, 17, of 88 Dresser Street South Boston, was wounded with a bullet to the left lung during a burglary at a store and a police encounter early yesterday. He remains in City Hospital with slim chances of recovery while three companions face charges.
Patrolman John T. Scott sighted four youths near H. Bencks & Son at 301 West Third Street. Patrick J. Cook of 76 Dresser Street is under arrest at Broadway station for breaking and entering. two others are sought. Scott fired toward the ground to frighten the runners as they fled toward Broadway. Yesterday's temperature.
Oscar II King of Sweden died at 9 10 this morning in the royal apartment at the palace surrounded by his family the aged Queen Sofia the crown prince Oscar Gustav and high ministers of state. Outside the palace great crowds stood with bowed heads and tearful eyes after the death was announced.
Captain William Cox reports Mine Owners' Association plans to reopen Goldfield mines this week with non union workers. Federal troops under Colonel Alfred Reynolds remain stationed as officials hedge on the move. The sheriff's telegram to Governor Sparks protesting troops awaits reply while owners hint at bringing in outside labor if locals stay away.
