Captain E P Bertholf urged Secretary McAdoo and Congress to boost the revenue cutter service with more vessels for high seas Great Lakes and river aid. He cited 327 lives saved 2755 assisted on distress ships and $18 900 in derelict recovery while noting underfunding and proposing coast guard consolidation and an Alaska supply depot to cut costs.

Two Men Trapped Under Car In Ferry Street Accident

On Ferry street Malden yesterday afternoon a runabout overturned trapping Ralph S Carter 27 of Melrose and Eugene R McCarty assistant superintendent of the Malden Melrose Gas Light Co. Carter was seriously injured at Malden Hospital while McCarty escaped with minor injuries. The driver Carter freed by strength after the car caught in tracks and overturned.

Alfred Sereno a Lynn barber was stabbed three times during an argument over the license question at a crowded Lynn event. Nicholas Nizetos was arrested after being found with a knife wound and fleeing the scene. The license vote, set for tomorrow, looms amid a heated campaign as both sides push for or against reopening saloons after six years.

The Country Day School on Nonantum Hill Newton near Brighton line suffered about $10,000 in damage from a fire caused by a defective flue. Two alarms brought Newton fire companies and Boston aid was sent.

Fire at Bowman Estate School Damages Upper Floors

William Lindo, a janitor, spotted a blaze at 2 30 and notified police. Flames roared from the third story as a citizen activated a fire alarm. Chief Randlett sent a second alarm and called Brighton for help. Instructors Chase Johnson and Stroymer rescued equipment from labs as water damaged lower floors. The Bowman estate school, valued at 60 000 dollars and owned by K Kerns, may remain closed for weeks.

After three weeks in jail as a stowaway aboard the Olympic Kemp the Kansas poet and exiled “affinity” of Upton Sinclair was guest of honor at a Poetry Society banquet in London. Canadian steamship lines form big merger

Port William Ont December 7. Several Great Lakes steamship lines have merged and will operate as the Canada Steamship Lines Limited. Joining are the Quebec Steamship Company Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company Ontario and Quebec Navigation Company Canadian Inter-Lake Line Inland Lines and Northern Navigation Company. The combined firm will control over 100 steamers.

Fires in East Boston Struck Two Buildings

Two early morning fires kept East Boston fire crews busy. At 3 03 in a 31 Webster Street barber shop owned by Joseph Caggiano, a $1000 loss to building and contents occurred with unknown cause. At 6 52 a fire in a three flat at 243 East Eagle Street, home of Arthur Mooney, resulted from a dropped lighted lamp with $25 damage.

Fail to Find Mrs Colby In Newton Search

An all day rain soaked search through Newton Oak Hill and Newton Highlands by police and Boy Scouts failed to locate Mrs Annie Colby who has been missing since last Thursday. Police plan to drag Silver Lake again as they pursue the theory she drowned herself near the Newton Centre sanitarium.
