The Rio Grande a Mallory liner of 25656 gross tons built in 1876 from Chester Pennsylvania caught fire in its hold about 205 miles northwest of Diamond Shoals. The Swanmore helped rescue passengers from the burning ship and transfer them back aboard the Rio Grande.

Hugh McGrail age 70 of 23 Common Street Charlestown died after falling from his bed to the floor about two feet. Residents heard a thud at 4 30 am and found him asleep on the floor. He regained consciousness briefly, was moved to bed, then found unconscious later and died en route to the Relief Hospital. Autopsy to be performed by Medical Examiner Magrath today.
