Tonight a Boston School of Social Science event at Tremont Temple features Charlies Zueblin lecturer and last year Progressive state senate candidate, John Spargo Socialist leader and author, and Tom Mann famed for leading England’s dock workers strike. Mann’s reputation spans multiple strikes and widespread influence among British workers.
Tom Mann rose to international prominence again after being arrested for inciting King's forces to commit traitorous and mutinous acts. He faced a charge of telling soldiers not to fire on striking miners and was sentenced to six months imprisonment but released after a brief period by the English home secretary.
Sheriff John Quinn of Charles street jail organized a Salvation Army musical festival for prisoners yesterday afternoon. Three soloists and a 30 member band performed for nearly two hours, bringing a rare entertainment event to the jail.
Five year old James DeCourcey of 45 Pine Ridge Road Newton was struck by a train while crossing tracks near Waban station and died an hour later. A laborer named Michael Mariconi, unloading rails from a flat car, was seriously injured when a rail fell on him and his right leg may be amputated.
Civil engineer G A Thayer found mummies with pots of beans in a cave at Prescott Arizona. He sent the mummies to the Smithsonian where they were dated at 25 000 years old. Thayer planted the beans and shipped the first harvest to Mrs J A Tudor in Champaign Illinois.
Medford police say they captured John Graham of Boston in a Harvard avenue garage yesterday. They believe he is part of a band الذي has robbed cars in Boston and suburbs over the past three months. A companion escaped toward Winchester and is being sought by police north of Boston.
After 147 years the Brooks home at High and Woburn in Medford undergoes remodeling. The plan retains its ancient appearance including the gabled roof and sections built by Jonathan Brooks. The site recalls Paul Revere's ride and the house once housed Governor John Brooks and historian Rev. Charles Brooks, each leaving a mark on local history.
Miss Jane Addams of Chicago argued that social and industrial improvement starts with women's suffrage in a Free Synagogue address titled Internationalism in Social Movement. Oscar Straus joined, saying Balkan war risks underscore the need for nationalizing social work to unite nations.
Montgomery Ward, pioneer of mail order merchandise, died in his Hyde Park home today of pneumonia after recently suffering a hip fracture from a fall. He was 70 years old.
Georgianna Spaulding a Malden resident and daughter of a colored preacher is arrested at Cambridge central station for the murder of Ralph Morrill known also as Ralph Green. The crime occurred at 22 School Street Cambridge early Sunday. Spaulding allegedly used a dirk Morrill had borrowed hours earlier during an intended attack.
Police say a woman stabbed Morrill after he slapped her and threatened her for refusing to pick up clothes scattered in their bedroom. She alleges he accused her of friendliness with Frederick White, also known as LeBlanc, who was held as a witness. Morrill, a Nova Scotia native, is described as a wanderer with no local relatives. The woman is Isham Epps’ daughter, a Malden preacher’s daughter now living apart from her husband, who remains missing.
In Calumet Michigan before daylight Arthur and Harry James were killed and Thomas Dally and Mary Nicholson fatally wounded in their apartment. The James brothers had come from Toronto to work at Copper Range Consolidated Mine, where workers are on strike. Six men are under arrest on suspicion as investigators note three bullet calibers suggesting multiple assailants.
Paris Dec 7 Senator Gaston Doumergue plans to form a ministry and will notify President Poincare tomorrow. A provisional cabinet placed Ribot Dupuy and Delcasse as foreign minister candidates, but all may refuse. Doumergue is expected to assume the foreign post, emulating Poincare’s earlier example.
Malden churches held no license meetings last evening with prominent speakers addressing congregations. A mass meeting at the Malden Auditorium featured Rev William H Van Allen of the Church of the Advent Boston.
David Warner, 38, of Troy Vermont, was found dead in a bed at 124 Jewett Street, believed poisoned. County Solicitor T A Sullivan ordered an autopsy after a medical referee's review. Fiske and Warner met a stranger downtown who asked if they "took anything."
Five men fell ill after drinking liquor from a bottle carried by a stranger and then began their journey home. Fiske and Warner reported stomach pains, with others affected shortly after ingestion.
The fourth National Tuberculosis Day was observed in churches around Boston yesterday. Lectures were planned for clergymen school principals and leaders of organizations. The Boston Association for the Relief and Control of Tuberculosis assisted by donating literature and sermon materials.
