President Roosevelt ordered General Funston to dispatch regular troops to Goldfield Nevada to quell disturbances. The force will depart from San Francisco with strength to be determined by General Funston after telegraphic requests from the Nevada governor.
Steele spoke of buying a revolver on Washington Street and returning it after it failed. He said three men in the Governor's chamber prompted him to fire to defend himself. He admitted firing near his Everett home and claimed self defense, insisting the Governor needed to hear how he had been swindled.
Born in East Boston about 38 years ago, un married, lived with his mother in Everett. A blacksmith by trade and former pugilist, he served as a private in Company L of the Fifth Regiment in the Spanish American War. He suffered a sunstroke in the Santiago trenches and became violently insane, attempting to shoot officers and later to kill himself after hospital discharge. He was sent to the National Insane Asylum in Washington, then to Westboro Insane Asylum in December 1905 on his mother's complaint, escaped and fought an Everett officer, was moved to Danvers Insane Hospital, and paroled November 13. His insanity involved delusions of wrongful commitment.

Edward Cohen president of the State Branch AFL and Dennis D. Driscoll secretary AFL were shot through the head and in critical condition. Arthur M. Huddell former president of the Boston Central Labor Union was slightly injured.
John A. Steele, recently released from Danvers, fired on labor leaders Dennis D. Driscoll and Edward Cohen in the Massachusetts Governor's chamber. Both men were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in critical condition. Cohen's prognosis was grave while Driscoll remained at risk. Steele was overpowered and taken back to Danvers as officials responded.
