President Roosevelt ordered federal troops to ready to aid in restoring order at Goldfield Nevada as miners threaten violence. Merchants and mine owners appealed to the president for protection of property amid wage disputes and a tense camp guarded by armed men and dynamiters.
William Mayhood, 26, a rendering plant worker at 52 Somerville Avenue, was gored by a wild steer and pinned against a wall. Fellow workers killed the animal to release him. He was taken to Boston Relief Hospital with a severe punctured wound and is expected to recover if no blood poisoning develops.
Worcester police hold a positive description of the slayer of Cora Fay whose body was found this morning at 6 in the doorway of her mother’s home. Two men were questioned and released after alibis. one was held briefly but cleared. A suspect remains unnamed but identified by description.
Chief Matthews states the suspect bears a strong likeness to the actual murderer whose identity officers have learned. He adds the man is well known around Worcester and likely known to readers, though authorities do not yet know his name.
Forecast for New England calls for Thursday clearing and somewhat colder conditions with snow in the south portion and Friday fair and brisk north winds. Eastern New York experiences fair weather Thursday and Friday with diminishing north winds and not as cold Friday.
Yesterday's blinding gale and snow left three vessels in peril. The Rebecca Shepherd, a three masted schooner, was driven onto Pollock's Shoals near Chatham and abandoned by six crew members rescued by Monomoy Point life saving. At Provincetown the Race Point crew battled heavy surf three times to aid the Harold J. McCarthy, which floated off Peaked Hills Bar unaided.
WINTHROP December 5. The Ocean View Hotel a notable Winthrop resort burned after midnight. The blaze began on the fourth floor in the tower room. Smoke forced the evacuation of J McDonough Edward V O Leary and the Grahams with guests on the third floor rescued by ladders.
Mrs Taft learned of the serious illness of President Taft’s mother and decided to hurry home. She will return with the secretary on the steamer President Grant from St Petersburg on December 4.
In New York on December 4 the mayor police and amusement promoters agree there will be no paid admission entertainments in the city next Sunday. The pledge aims to enforce a citywide ban on charged admissions, pending official action.
Witness at the Finance Commission hearing details startling admissions in the city supply department. George P. Kock, assistant purchasing agent since 1900, recalls Maher Bros contract for flagstone at 67 cents per square foot and says ex Alderman Patrick Bowen offered a suit of clothes, then found a $50 bill on his desk.
Mr Kock recalls meeting Mr Maher of Maher Bros around the contract period. He drafted the agreement at 83 percent cents per square foot and did not raise the price under instruction. Kock served as Mr Mitchell’s assistant in the supplies office.
The August contract for flagstone set at 67 cents per square foot doubling the prior price per linear foot, with Maher Bros. paid 27679.41 for 35185 square feet delivered. Testimony cites gifts to George Kock and other officials, and absence of Maher Bros. and former supplies chiefs at the hearing.
