Mayors order on hotel fire escapes sparks fatal blaze probe

Reported Oct 24 order by Boston building department required fire escapes on the Arcadia lodging house eight street side with openings on upper floors. Owner Moses H Gulesian and lessee Joseph G Lyons disputed responsibility claiming the duty lay with the owner. Authorities link failure to comply to 28 deaths and begin grand jury work.

Mayor Fell in Union Lodging House Collapse At City Fire Site

Mayor Fitzgerald collapsed while inspecting the Union lodging house at 1057 Washington Street after Arcadia fire comments. He fell headlong from a fourth floor hallway, was saved by aides and reporters, struck his head, and was taken home to Dorchester for medical care. Police cleared a crowd as medics arrived.
