Garfield board of audit seals down no bly
The Garfield board of audit approved a sum of 6500 as compensation for Dr. Bliss, less than he sought but deemed ample. Agnew and Hamilton receive 5000 each, Reyburn and Boynton 4000 apiece, and Mrs Edson accepts a share of 23000 though her claim was over three times that.

Government Tax Reduction Urged By Internal Revenue Chief
The report by G B Barm, commissioner of internal revenue, to secretary of the treasury urges tax reduction. It notes receipts rose from 113 million in 1879 to 146.7 million in 1881 and predicts current year collections will not fall below about 143 million if taxes stay. The plan favors prudent debt payoff and avoiding wasteful expenditures while reducing annual revenue by 55 million.

Arabi Pasha Pleads Guilty and Is Sentenced to Death
Cairo reports Arabi Pasha confessed guilt to rebellion before a court martial. The panel then sentenced him to death, later commuted by the khedive to exile for life. Prosecution abandoned all charges except armed rebellion. Deliberations brief as European observers predominated. The decree warns of renewed death penalty if Arabi returns to Egypt. A German steamer arriving from New York encountered a gale and damaged ships.
