Rear Admiral Alfred T. Mahan U S N retired famed as a leading naval strategist and author died at the naval hospital in Washington aged 74 from heart trouble after weeks of poor health. He had overtaxed himself studying the European clash and following naval operations.
Captain William Riley of Bulfinch Street station and two firefighters were injured when the top floor of a fire-swept building at 7 State Street caved in early today. They fell about 15 feet to the floor below and were rescued by fellow firefighters.
Captain Riley taken to Relief Hospital. Hoseman J. J. Mc Namara and Ladder 8 ladderman Daniel Crowley slightly injured and work. District Chief John Madison also hurt by falling timbers while directing at the staircase foot. The fire started on the fifth floor and spread. a photographer L. H. Wormwood was confined to his room by water. A nameless man on the fourth floor refused to leave his offices to save valuables. Sergeant Horton from City Hall avenue station discovered the fire, initially mistaking smoke for fog.
Philip Lascola, 35, of 220 Havre Street East Boston, was attacked on Border Street and robbed of a $10 gold ring. Police arrested James D. Miller of 908 Winthrop Avenue Beachmont and search for other suspects in what officers call one of East Boston’s boldest robberies in years.

Official dispatches report Germany has captured 12000 prisoners and 29 siege guns. German ships reportedly sailed to the North Sea from Kiel as plans for a naval raid show activity. French advances occur in the Argonne forest and Verdun sectors amid heavy artillery along the Belgian front.
Despatches from London report German forces escaping the Lodz trap and retreating toward the German frontier with heavy casualties. Von Makkensen’s corps, blocked near Lodz, is said to be joining reinforcements from Thorn under von Hindenburg. Russian pursuit harasses flanks as the battle shifts westward. Warsaw defense remains contested and the war in Russian Poland is far from over.
Governor Walsh said he had received no report from the Parole Board on Daniel J. Cooper’s petition for commutation and could not comment on the case. Cooper is sentenced to die in the electric chair during the week of December 6 for murder. A report was expected at today’s executive council meeting. He remains calm in his cell at the Geath house, smoking and sleeping, eating voraciously, and rarely speaking except when spoken to, with Warden Allen and Rev. Mr. Whitney visiting daily.
Professor Thomas A. Jaggar of MIT and his assistants, while studying Mauna Loa eruption, were caught in a snow storm near the summit. Snow slides overwhelmed the party but none were seriously injured as lava streams cut the mountainside.
