West Tisbury native and Yale 1817 graduate Rufus P. Spalding died in Cleveland at 88. He joined the Free Soilers in 1852 and helped organize the Republican party and was a prominent Free Mason.
George Vandenhoff, an actor and reader once prominent in Boston, died in England. He was the son of John Vandenhoff, famed for Hamlet, and he acted as Hamlet at Tremont Theatre in 1842. He gave the Opening Address at the Howard Atheneum in 1846 and later appeared at the National Theatre. A son of his also pursued drama.
