Aug 25 Washington report: weary lawmakers and an impatient president confronted an unprecedented government crisis after last night's futile bid to adjourn. Tomorrow's sessions in both houses threaten chaotic lawmaking with a likely quorum shortfall and many senators returning home.
The double filibuster halted a plan to end Congress and looms again as the Senate debates a record vote on the Penrose resolution probing Standard Oil contributions in 1904 and Archbold Perkins connections. Chamberlain backs the old State claims payment, House leaders refuse to concede. If La Follette presses for a record vote a quorum would be needed and the Senate could be held indefinitely, stalling adjournment.

New York police remain without a suspect in the murder of Miss Julia M Curran at the Hotel Boulevard on Thursday night. Detectives and a large force were deployed near West Sixty eighth Street station after Coroner's Physician Schultze accused police of delaying the search and falsifying records.
Captain James Dunn led over a dozen detectives at the station as they questioned relatives and others connected to Miss Curran. The Kinnears urged interviewing the superintendent of an East Fifty-Eighth street apartment house, where Miss Curran’s companion Mrs. W. D. Smith lived, but some detectives balked at pursuing that lead.
Jack McGee, an amateur aviator who flew solo for the first time a week ago, attempted a longer voyage from Saugus to Rocky Point Rhode Island. A 30 to 40 mph southwest gale blew him far off course and he battled the sea for two hours before he reached Readville. Experienced aviators warned against the risky trip.
The flyer describes fighting up through downdrafts and wind gusts to reach about 3000 feet over Oak Island. He recalls freezing hands and dodging dangers as crowds watched from Revere beach, believing a beach landing would endanger others. He notes continuing difficulties as he battled air currents.
In Fairhaven Vermont on August 25 two young women Miss Mary Whitman of Troy New York and Miss Margaret Rich ter of New York City were drowned when a motor boat carrying them and two young men collided with the lake steamer A B Cook on Lake Bomoseen last night.
William Bushee and Robert Edwards freed Miss Whitman from beneath the overturned craft and saved Miss Whitman after the boat sank. They attempted to reach Miss Richter but could not, finding her lifeless as the lake steamer approached in the rain.
Prostrated man James Bartlett 35 of 39 North Street collapsed on Washington Street near Beach yesterday at 11 am after the intense heat. Forecaster Smith predicted continues for two or three days. Boston logged a 90 degree afternoon, just shy of Aug 25 record set at 93 in 1909, as the nation sweltered.
Newport report says Cornelius Vanderbilt hosted a banquet at Beaulieu with Mrs. Vanderbilt. Despite restocking, champagne nearly ran out as wine poured from pitchers and glasses stayed filled. Before morning, final champagnes were opened and a fresh supply arrived by wagon.
Cleveland August 25. John D Rockefeller while staying at Forest Hill takes up a pleasant hobby aside from golf transforming himself into a modern Haroun Al Raschid during his visit.

Frank Jacoby returned from a berrying trip to find his wife dead in bed with a head wound. His five year old son lay unconscious on the floor. A broken trunk contained $225 missing. Charles Smith, a boarder at the Jacoby home, was arrested and charged with the crime. Both men are foreigners and worked at a local pulp mill.

Representatives Flood of Virginia Stedman of North Carolina and McKinley of Illinois have been named the House members of a new commission to probe how foreign governments buy American grown tobacco.
