Perkins challenges the moving of a Senate hearing to New York City calling the talk absurd. Roosevelt denounces Archbold's testimony as a frame up against the deceased Bliss and defends Bliss’s integrity amid Standard Oil accusations.
Newport features a grand fete with guests in Oriental costumes glittering with gems. A New York theatrical company staged a special production on a complete stage with re creations of minarets and domes. Magnificent decorations with priceless displays, diamond studded and gold slippers noted in ball rooms and dressing rooms.
Newport hosts an extravagant evening at Beaulieu Cornelius Vanderbilt residence featuring a 400 guest fancy dress ball in oriental costumes with gems. The Merry Countess company arrived from New York staging a three act comedy on a Broadway style set in the ballroom.
Elaborate quadrilles by renowned hosts closed the affair with a New York cadre of chefs serving a supper that became a dinner. Beaulieu’s grounds were described as magnificently adorned with countless arches resembling eastern minarets, while dancers moved to the music.
The convention ended with officers elected for the coming year. President is Charles W. Reitler of Denver, vice-president William T. Bottome of New York, secretary Edward H. Eldridge of Boston, and treasurer George A. McBride of Philadelphia.

Gilford Gates of 48 Pine Street Malden was attacked and gored by a mad bull at H A Tainter farm in Medford yesterday afternoon. He was wounded in the chest and body and badly bruised after being trampled. Farm hand Carl Anderson tried to intervene but fled as the beast charged.
In American baseball results Boston defeated Cleveland 5 to 1. Washington topped Detroit 8 to 1 in the first game and 6 to 4 in the second. Chicago beat New York 4 to 2. In the National League New York won 2 to 1 over Pittsburg in the first game and 3 to 2 in the second. McLoughlin defeats Williams in a separate match. Massachusetts shooters win Wakefield field event. Chicago types triumph. Woodland and Country Club golfers advance as survivors.
Fred L. Carpenter of Gloucester, charged with larceny of 30000 from the estate of his late sister in law, Mrs Jennie S Gookin of Boston, was captured in Manchester New Hampshire after mailing a letter to a friend. He was taken at a cottage on Lake Massabesh by Manchester inspectors and Boston detective Silas P Waite. He had been sought since 1911 when a judge ordered him held to answer for bonds of the American Bell Telephone Company in a dispute over Mrs Gookin's will. The estate valued at 200000 prompted the case.
Redmond Clark an 11 year old boy from South Boston was struck and fatally injured by an automobile on the boulevard opposite the Derby Racer at Revere Beach yesterday afternoon. Francis P Blair a 24 year old Washington DC auto dealer is held on $2000 bonds for manslaughter. The accident occurred at 3 30 PM and the boy was dragged under the car as it passed.
Advices from Washington indicate an additional appropriation of 96000 for the Boston Custom House is nearly certain in the general deficiency bill. Four Boston congressmen faced House opposition from Chairman Fitzgerald and dropped the item to avoid blocking passage in the Senate.
New York August 23. Police Commissioner Waldo announces listing of owners of buildings used as gambling or disorderly houses during his regime. President Taft today signed the legislative executive and judicial appropriation bill after removing provisions to abolish the Commerce Court and shorten Civil Service tenure. The Commerce Court will be provided for until March 4, 1913, with amendments eliminated.
MAYNARD Aug 23 Miss Cora Olsen 19 daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Olsen was shot at her home on the South Acton road by Charles Lowery 20 a rejected suitor and deserter from the battleship Missouri. He fired five shots from a 32 caliber revolver. four struck the girl. She is at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and is expected to recover.
After a shooting, Lowery fled through a kitchen window and was captured at South Acton station by Deputy Chief John Connors of Maynard. A posse traced his footprints in mud as Mrs Olsen aided her daughter and the girl, wounded, reached American Powder Company offices before being taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Colonel Roosevelt dictated a statement from Sagamore Hill rebutting John D Archbolds Senate testimony about a Standard Oil campaign gift. He denounced Archbolds statements as untruthful and described calls urging non prosecution as a wicked assault on a dead man while calling for Archbold and Senator Penrose to testify on their Industrial Commission relations.
In his final remarks Colonel Roosevelt thanked Archbold and Penrose for making it clear beyond any doubt that he is the man.
Washington sources say Colonel Roosevelt is expected to testify before the Senate sub committee investigating campaign expenditures within days. John D. Archbold alleged Roosevelt knew of Standard Oil money in the 1904 campaign. George W. Perkins is slated to appear next Tuesday as the panel debates its next steps.
The United States dispatches the gunboat Vicksburg to Guaramas in the Gulf of California from San Diego to protect Americans on the western Mexican coast. Additional small gunboats may be sent from West Indian waters to Vera Cruz and ports to the southward.
