A Finance Commission report charges Mayor Hibbard with wasteful spending and improper appointments. It urges salary cuts and removal of unnecessary staff, calling for relief of executive pressure and a return to reform. The mayor, ill at home in Dorchester, had no comment.
The report accuses the mayor of padding payrolls and boosting salaries as part of excessive expenditures. The tax rate of 16.50 per thousand prompted the commission to scrutinize appropriations and administrative methods to explain the rate. Continued on Page 4-Third Column.
In New York on August 23 a Lackawanna freight train near Hackensack was stopped by air brakes after five bandits tried to breach a car seal. Watchman Mason Gilliland fired on the robbers, was shot in the left thigh and foot, and the thieves fled with no cargo reported stolen.
Merrimac August 23 electric car crash on a hill left Mrs. David E. Currier of Amesbury seriously hurt with arm injuries and possible internal damage. Mrs. William L. Gale of Merrimac sustaining a serious spine injury. An unknown man and a woman also injured and several other passengers shaken up as the wrecked car blocked the road.
An unidentified man was hurled about 20 feet and left unconscious in a collision. After revival he refused to state his name and was transported by a special car. A Ballardville woman, bruised and refusing to identify herself, was helped by friends and then taken for medical care. The vehicles involved belonged to the Haverhill line recently acquired by the Southern New Hampshire Traction Co.
Annisquam cottage scene follows Mrs. Fanny Connable Lancaster’s return from Europe in company with her mother and siblings. Reported aboard with Count Guido Costarelli the voyage sparked curiosity among summer residents, though she declined to discuss details.
