John Briggs fired into the crowd killing Richard Paiffit, as Chief Amour and President Jones tried to quell a daylong battle. Amour was wounded, others injured, Briggs captured after a chase. NATICK Aug 22 John B Messenger famed Natick veterinary surgeon and partner in Howe's Express Company died at noon of black diphtheria. Burial followed at 6 p m by Health Board order. Messenger born 1825 in Natick. started veterinary hospital at Brookside Farm West Natick. Survived by two children Dr Charles W Messenger and Mrs W F Tilton. son Charles W. Messenger recently worked with him.

Police Officer Drunk Seen During Patrol at Dover Corner
Passersby reported at 10 last night that Officer Michael Callahan appeared intoxicated while arresting an apparently sober man at the Washington Dover intersection. The man was taken to Station, then released by Lieutenant Gardiner as Sergeant Watkins was sent to relieve Callahan. Unable to obtain statements from Temple House proprietor, no details were provided. The matter remains to be reviewed by the board.

Rescued Officer Angell Recovering After Tenement Fire
Reserve Officer Gilbert H. Angell, wounded bravely amid a Tremont Street fire yesterday, is home recovering at 108 Ziegler Street Roxbury. The 34 year old greced grocer turned officer, born Greenville Rhode Island December 31 1859, saved a woman and collapsed from smoke before being aided by fellow officer Cleveland. He was overpowered but regained when reaching fresh air and remains under care after transfer from Station 10.

Runaway horse injures child in South Boston accident
A runaway accident in South Boston at 7:45 last evening involved George E. Hildreth's horse. The carriage wheels ran over 18 month old Michael J. Coughlan near East First Street, causing a brain concussion before the child was carried home unconscious.

Hollow Boom Installed On Colonia At Providence
Colonia sailed to Bristol and replaced her solid boom with a hollow version thirty inches at the widest, tapering to fifteen and eighteen inches. The barrel-like, internally hooped boom weighs about half the solid one and measures ninety eight feet long. Sailor Harry Haff praised the change as the yacht showed little list. Vigilant plans a similar upgrade in Bristol tomorrow, with a boom two feet longer.
