French forces launch two counter attacks at Verdun then strike back with bomb and bayonet charges. Canadians push to reclaim trenches, seizing about 2000 yards and nearing the heart of Lens amid fierce fighting for the city.
Allied forces push deep on the Verdun front with hard gains near Lens. French troops seize vantage points north of Verdun while Canadians move toward Lens heart in 2000 yards of ground. German counterattacks under Crown Prince Rupprecht fail to halt Petain and suffer heavy casualties.
Massachusetts Democrats lack a statewide ticket for the first time in party history. Only Frederick W. Mansfield qualified for the gubernatorial primary ballot before filing deadlines. William F. Fitzgerald withdrew late. All other state candidates failed to secure enough signatures.
