About 2000 naval volunteers landed from battleships anchored off Breakwater to spend a day ashore at Block Island Illinois. They monopolized jitneys hired beach ponies bought cigarettes and ice cream, congested the bathing beach, and left a memorable mark on the quiet summer resort.

Nine Lowell men were rescued from a disabled motor boat near Race Point Provincetown after drifting nearly 14 hours without food and little water. They had sailed as guides and despatch bearers for Henry Sullivan of Lowell who staged a Provincetown to Nantasket match swim with Charles Toth of Boston.
Nine men—Edwin Welch, Chester Hill, John Mealey, Thomas Grourke, William McGrail, John Magee, Frank Ryan, William Meagher, and Jose LaDuke—were found exhausted after drifting since Saturday night. They were landed at Atlantic avenue and towed to Boston by tug Clincher and tug Sadie Ross after signaling steamers with no response.
Three bathers were rescued yesterday afternoon by the City Point Volunteer Life Saving Corps. Harry Magnet, 12, of 26 Oswego Street, waded beyond his depth in Headhouse Bay. Charles Coray, 18, of 40 Hudson Street, was pulled from the water by Commodore C. J. Hickey. John Sullivan, 14, of 32 Bigelow Street, was stunned by a kick from another bather and saved after aid from guard J. Wolyniec. He reached the emergency room then home.
Four year old Gilbert Maisam of 148 Leverett Street was struck by an automobile driven by Carlos Simon of Older Street Lawrence in Brighton Street yesterday. He escaped with a sprained elbow and was treated locally.
Three Brockton men Michael Corbey John Phillips and Charles Yatowitz are held on a disturbance charge as police investigate the death of Adam Synklewitz of Snowstreet. Synklewitz body was found in Lake Nipponickett Bridgewater with $5 on his person after starting with $100. An autopsy ordered by Medical Examiner A E Paine was to be held.
William Rondeau of South Lawrence was pulled from rough surf at Salisbury Beach by life guards Ellsworth Foote and William True. A physician treated him on scene and he was revived after hours of effort. a Newburyport motor ambulance was ready but not needed.
Lowel reports the drowning of G H Dion aged 24 a bartender of 2 Willie avenue after two motorboats collided on Lake Mascuppie along Mountain Rock road Dion riding on the bow of George Russell s craft was thrown overboard and sank despite efforts by his two companions and the other boat party to recover him.
Manchester by the Sea residents could gain exclusive access to Singing Beach with possible exceptions for a few nonresidents. The issue arises from local opposition among townspeople who want the beach kept for residents only, impacting workers from Salem and nearby factories who formerly enjoyed the facility.
J Alexander Lodge editor of North Shore Breeze and Jeff Reed a park commissioner led a protest to bar factory workers from the town beach. Reed sent a letter to the paper, provoking townwide debate as residents debate whether outsiders may use the public bath houses.

John Nelson of Hanover Street Lowell, a passenger, is cut about the mouth and requires stitches. Both cars heavily damaged.
Mr and Mrs George H Turner of 288 Front Street Weymouth were injured when their car skidded at Main and High streets South Hingham and crashed into a telephone pole. Mrs Turner suffered a severe nervous shock and multiple injuries while Mr Turner had facial lacerations. They were treated by Dr George Dorr and sent home.
Members of the United Improvement Society of East Lexington and their families joined a trolley outing to Canobie Lake Park in Salem New Hampshire yesterday. The group rode special cars from Arlington Heights after 8 am and enjoyed a park dinner on arrival.
Dublin N H August 2 Daniel Catlin a tobacco merchant of St Louis died at his summer home today after an illness of three weeks He had been here since June.
James J. Deveney a Cambridge Vulcanizing Company employee visited the Inman square garage to refill a gas line tank. He extinguished an oil tail light and briefly lit a match to peer inside the tank causing a flash, a quick exit, a garage alarm, and scorched paint but no fire or injuries.
