Washington August 18 Railroad officials after meeting with President Wilson appear ready to reject his plan for a nationwide railway strike settlement though managers gave no final decision. Employee representatives approved the proposal by about three to one indicating broad support for the arbitration framework and the eight hour day.

The body of a jockey killed at the Flemington New Jersey county fair was identified as Sidney Haggerty or Sidney Kahn, son of Solomon Kahn the New York metal manufacturer. He was a Columbia University student, owned horses, and rode as an amateur for the owner of his mount. His parents confirmed the identity and said he longed to ride race horses.
A new order in council under the defence of the realm act bans from entering Ireland any person not a British subject or any subject who has left the United Kingdom from abroad since March 1 1916. Any such persons traveling to or found in Ireland will be deemed guilty of a summary offence.
Norah Connelly told a packed audience at Faneuil Hall a sad story of her father Jim Connelly commander in chief of the army of the Irish republic being shot dead after being taken from a Dublin hospital. Matthew Cummings read a London despatch revealing Britain limits entry to Ireland, sealing Norah from home.

The Rev. Joseph J. O Connor curate at All Saints Catholic Church Roxbury died suddenly of a shock about 10 last evening at the parsonage. He was 44, born in Revere, a Boston College graduate of 1893, ordained 1897. He served Danvers five years and 14 years at All Saints Roxbury as assistant to Pastor Rev Charles Regan. Funeral arrangements are handled by Rev John F Duran and will be announced today.
Nahant board of health votes quarantine to bar admission of people from infected areas and warns residents they may be barred on return. Officials urge town cooperation in reporting violations to prevent infantile paralysis.
On the Somme front today French and British forces won further victories after a heavy bombardment. Infantry attacks from Pozieres to Clery yielded territorial gains with many prisoners and guns captured.

The war office announced that Turkish troops are fighting alongside Germany and Austria in Galicia. Unofficial reports in the prior weeks indicated large Turkish deployments to aid the eastern front, with estimates from 70 000 to 150 000 soldiers.
A Bern despatch claiming the submarine liner Deutschland arrived at Bremen has little credence. Officials say no confirmation has been issued and arrival announcements are likely from the German government. The ship is overdue by a day or two, but delays were anticipated.

Haverhill reports chauffeur H Rant Wekaijelam and business owner Sebonk Y Devegian were arrested for operating without a license and fleeing after striking John Scully, 49, of 25 Eighth avenue, who was seriously injured.
Scully stepped from the curb on Portland Street as a vehicle swept past causing a compound fracture of the right leg and other injuries. The car fled the scene. Motorcycle Officer John Regan and Officer Foren later arrested the two men at the Devegian store.
John Czapski aged 3, son of Mr and Mrs Czapski of 40 Medford street Chelsea, was run over and killed last night by an auto truck owned by Jacob Levosky owner of the L K Kusted Laundry Company Chelsea. Police say the truck was moving on Broadway when the boy darted from the curb and was struck by the forward wheels.
The Senate approved the government shipping bill by 38 to 21, a long fought measure that could allow Congress to adjourn by September 1. The bill, revised to minimize government operation costs, drew universal Democratic support and solid Republican opposition after a Senate filibuster and Democratic revolt in the prior session. The measure has already cleared the House.
David Russell of 14 Claremont Park Boston on vacation at Hampton Beach had a near drowning when cramps struck him while swimming about 125 feet from shore. He was seized by the breakers and rescued after a critical moment.
The Wilson Club of Ward 17 backed President Wilson in the new Ward 17. William J. Lyons serves as president, and the officers pledged to strive for the re election of the nation’s chief magistrate.

A farmer posse formed in Cornish, Me., to subdue a four year old bull belonging to Calvin Huntress that escaped from a barn. The animal gored a three year old colt and chased workers into the woods, while Huntress son Lowville, 19, climbed a tree to escape.
Hyman Rosenthal a 9 year old of Roxbury was struck by an inbound Humboldt Avenue streetcar after alighting from an outbound Mattapan car from which he had been stealing a ride. He suffered a skull fracture and was taken to City Hospital for treatment.
