Public inquiry into Mrs Washburn’s death amid illegal operation claim

Medical examiner’s report details hypostatic pneumonia as direct cause and a criminal operation with excessive blood loss as a contributory factor. An inquest was ordered following information from the report. Assistant district attorney opened an investigation after a letter from Dr Edwin P Gleason of Onset stated Mrs Washburn admitted to an illegal operation at her Onset summer home since July 30. She died after being treated by a Brockton doctor, who she said performed the operation and was warned death was near but she would not reveal identity. Burial took place at her mother-in-law’s home on West Elm Street. Besides her husband, head of F B Washburn Cracker and Confectionery, she left a two-year-old daughter and a seriously ill mother in Manchester, NH. The Washburns have drawn public attention since their marriage three years ago. Mrs Washburn, born Mazel Gassett of Milford, was a former telephone operator at the Washburn factory. Washburn recently defended 18-year-old Marion Bush accused by Mrs Washburn of larceny of a dress. Miss Bush claimed the dress was given by Washburn during a visit, a claim Washburn supported by saying he placed the dress in the girl’s knitting bag.
