A passenger plane clipped a wire and collided with a tree in Brattleboro Vermont burning after hitting high tension lines. The crash trapped three passengers and sparked a fire, killing two aboard. Fire crews worked to reach survivors.
Arthur F. Noone, a stamp clerk in the North Adams post office, woke to a call announcing he won a Ford touring car in the Post's Ford a Day contest for his story Don't Know Why He Was Deaf.
In Waterville Missouri Mr and Mrs Henry Giguere arrived with seventeen children in one Word car winning the annual Family Auto Contest. The Emery Brown store rewarded the family with sixty dollars in merchandise as townsfolk cheered the parade route and the young entrants.
New York Aug 18 five great railroad brotherhoods entered mediation to end the nationwide shop men's strike offering a practical proposition for peace. Railroads considered the plan.
President Harding will invoke the Sherman anti trust law to keep rail transport moving amid a conflict over unions. Both sides face civil and criminal prosecution for conspiring to hinder interstate commerce and federal troops could back court decisions if needed. The National Coal Agency is urged to buy and sell coal to address the disruption.
Judge Landis released Phil Douglas letter claiming he offered St. Louis players money to stay with him and then quit. The disclosure follows Douglas admission, leading to permanent ineligibility in the National League.
Meredith Neck, N H August 18 The Stone Cliff Farm buildings at Stone Cliff Farm in Meredith Neck were struck by lightning and burned, destroying the structures. The property belonged to C B Cush ing of Boston. Louis Cushing, an invalid son, was removed with difficulty. All livestock was saved except a valuable bull. Stone Cliff was a show place on Lake Winnipesaukee.
After an argument with her father over a young man, Mary Corelle of 2 Castlecourt East Boston drank disinfectant. Her father found her in pain and she was taken to the relief station where doctors expected recovery.
In Tarrytown New York a woman stopped at the auto company to inflate tires for a three week trip. She claimed her husband advised 60 pounds weekly and the proprietor warned against overinflation.
Chicopee August 18 James George aged 18 choked while eating an apple and bathing in the Chicopee River. He struggled in the swift current and drowned after entering deep water. Rescue divers found his body in under thirty minutes but he could not be revived.
Officials declined to disclose terms of a proposed settlement. Some sources said the deal would reinstate strikers with full seniority and pensions while preserving new hires. Others described a faster restoration with seniority adjusted by all. The plan reportedly rests on a gentlemen’s agreement balancing rights of old and new workers.
Forecast suggests decent conditions with mainly clear skies and a noticeable drop in temperature from yesterday. Light breezes may accompany the cooler air, especially in the afternoon.

A general alarm fire at the Cambridge Auto Body and Wagon Company on 149 First Street East Cambridge caused over 50 000 in damage and threatened nearby manufacturing. Fifty horses were rescued from a Frost Forwarding Company stable behind the plant.
Patrolman Breen spotted smoke from a two story wooden factory and raised the alarm. Councillor Frank Coady Gustave Clochran William Carroll Thomas Austin and George Sibley helped release horses from Frost stable as wind shifted sparks toward nearby tenements. Fire gutted the building with machinery and stock of auto and wagon bodies. cause undetermined though fire seemed to originate on the lower paint shop level. Labinsky presides over the company.

A Curtis Oriole in a meet near Brattleboro Vermont plunged into high tension wires at about 80 feet. The father and his son died outright while a young woman passenger suffered severe burns and was not expected to survive. The pilot escaped with minor injuries.
Irma Schreiber, a Budapest arrival and student, is sentenced by Judge Healy to ten days in a workhouse after attacking actress Miss Jean Robertson on May 9. Probation Officer Horan corroborates Schreiber’s claim of paying Robertson $1000 weekly during their betrothal. Robertson is currently in Europe.

A violent cloudburst in Hardwick Vermont toppled a large canvas tent during a Chautauqua event on West Church Street injuring three seriously. About five hundred residents and visitors were caught in the chaos as darkness and rain worsened the scene.
