A wave of food riots sweeps major cities as mobs loot shops set fires and dynamite is used in several districts. Troops are deployed nationwide and many civilians are wounded in Tokio and surrounding areas.
Allied troops under Haig smash German lines along a four mile stretch west of Armentieres. French and British forces pound German positions along the Somme and Oise fronts with Germans retreating between Albert and Arras amid fierce fighting.
British and French forces push Germans from the Lys salient west of Armentieres as Haig’s troops force retreat to safer ground eastward. The Franco-British advance continues along the Rouen to Noyon line with attacks north and south of the area.
In Japan troops were deployed in nearly every major city including Maizuru Nagoya and Kobe amid unrest. Rioting crowds reach about 30000 at Nagoya and armed forces clash with protesters in several locations. Tokyo reports serious riots with property damage and looting in business and theatre districts.
The first contingent of American troops arrived at Vladivostok aboard a transport from Manila after a seven and a half day voyage. Crowds cheered from the docks and ships while Czechs nearby welcomed the Americans amid a brief five hour fogbound entry.
An advertisement claims a book explains rheumatism causes and treatment and offers a mailed free copy. It directs readers to Wel dona Co., Suite 33, 132 Boylston Street, Boston for the publication.
On the Vesle front the Americans gained ground at Frapelle despite 2500 German shells and a 45-man raid repulsed by American artillery and rifle fire. In the Woevre an American patrol skirmished. one soldier, wounded in nine places, carried a teammate to safety.
On the Vesle front the American and French forces exchange heavy shelling with German guns replying into daylight. Artillery activity shows the Allies firing about two shells for every one from the enemy during the day.
In Brighton Maine on August 18 the mother of Eugene Cody Norton known as Cora insists the child is a girl despite a marriage in Augusta to a schoolteacher. She confirms the Skowhegan birth certificate listed the child as a boy.
The passage describes Cora as a brilliant child and an ideal school teacher praised by her mother and feared by none, eliciting astonishment from all siblings present as she is addressed in an unconventional way.

In the American League Washington beat St Louis 2 to 1. In the National League Boston defeated Chicago 3 to 1 in the first game and Chicago won 3 to 1 in the second. St Louis swept Philadelphia 4 to 0 in the first game and 5 to 1 in the second. Cincinnati outscored Brooklyn 8 to 1 in the first game and 3 to 1 in the second.
Cologne Gazette prints a telegram from the imperial direction to the Frankfort burgomaster. The emperor expresses deep sympathy for the misfortune in Frankfort caused by an enemy attack contrary to international law and asks the burgomaster to convey the victims’ relatives the sympathy of the all high.
The War Department announced that since entering the war through Aug 10 the United States produced and accepted 108,973 machine guns for army use. Of this total 226 were Browning type.
Eight persons were slightly injured when an auto truck overturned on Wellington bridge Medford after a collision with a Boston Elevated electric car. The truck driver and its occupants were on their way to Lawrence and were thrown from the vehicle as it crossed the track.
