German defenses crumble as Allied forces close in from three fronts. The city, a keystone in the northern German line, suffers determined assaults while French units push a deep wedge north of Noyon and threaten to dominate surrounding defenses.
A large oil tank steamer is afire about 25 miles off Cape Hatteras. A submarine lies nearby, and the crew has been rescued by life guards. It is believed the submarine is German and the tanker was set ablaze by shellfire.
Navy officials in Washington say there is nothing to release about the attack on a large oil tank steamer off Cape Hatteras by a German submarine. Beaufort dispatches suggest the U boat sought oil, refilled, then shelled and set the tanker afire.
The Republican State Committee passed resolutions demanding Gov Horace Graham quit office after a Vermont audit found about 20000 missing in his State Auditor era. Graham did not attend the special session but admitted fault in salary and expense handling and asked the public to withhold judgment while examiners review his books.

In East Corinth Maine on August 16 Eugene Cody Norton formerly known as Miss Cora Norton disclosed he would join the army and shed his feminine attire after marrying Abby E Foster a Bates College graduate and former Harmony High girls basketball captain. The wedding occurred in Governor Millickens private office after a one day honeymoon.

Washington reports that the billion dollar rail budget approved for McAdoo has been increased to 1.097 billion dollars. The rise exceeds the original federal budgets for all roads, driven largely by the demand for additional cars and locomotives to meet wartime requirements.

Washington reports Surgeon General Gorgas says 50 000 women will be needed by July 1 next year to aid in caring for sick and wounded of the American army. Many will be trained nurses for overseas service while young wives with husbands in France may serve as hospital assistants. The Army School of Nursing will train 21 to 35 year old fit women for overseas duty. Up to 15,000 women may serve as hospital assistants or student nurses in the United States.
