Two Tariff Decisions And Senate Tariff Notes

The Attorney General interprets tariff provisions to include iron and steel forgings, revoking the May decision and setting duties accordingly. Card clothings attached to carding machines are not eligible for separate classification. Secretary Fairchild manages the sinking fund with about 45 million needed this year, noting no call bonds available this year and a larger total purchases since the program began. Senator Hale doubts census legislation can pass this session, suggesting delay to the next short session. Various discussions follow on duties for type metal, electrotype shells, paper, and chemicals. Farquhar proposes excluding finished electrotype shells from lower classes. Sub-Treasurer Aldrich reports Boston receipts of 75,202,467 for the fiscal year, detailing breakdowns across customs, deposits, and other accounts.
