Secretary Bayard told a Post reporter there is no plan to withdraw the fisheries treaty and that rejection would not necessarily end the two year modus vivendi. He noted Canadian licenses allow current fishing operations to continue until expiration and said U S policy would be unclear if the treaty fails.
Halifax Aug 17 The Danish steamer Thingvalla collided with the Geiser early Tuesday morning. Captain Laub described the harbor calm before a fogless dawn as the bow was torn away and lifeboats launched. Survivors were saved, others lost, with Captain Moller recounting a dramatic escape amid wreckage and sinking ships.
Alarm 212 at 12:04 PM yesterday for a mattress fire at 30 Albany Street caused slight damage. Box 48 reported a minor blaze in a West Somerville lodge tool house with a $25 loss. Box 165 at 8:50 PM last night traced to oil rags igniting in the Jerome Crosby furniture establishment at 112 Fulton Street.

New Haven Connecticut August 17 The executive committee of the State council British American Association passed resolutions praising members for defending free public schools and urging naturalization of British subjects. An attempt to declare support for the Republican nominee failed.
Five refrigerator cars loaded with dressed beef derailed due to a broken journal on the Northern railroad near North Boscawen New Hampshire. The track was torn up for a long stretch and all southbound passengers were carried by, while northbound travelers were routed via the Concord and Claremont line. The track remained blocked throughout the day.
Adolph Holman, a grocery wagon driver from Lona Branca New Jersey, shot his mother in law and killed his wife during a picnic yesterday before taking his own life. Jealousy sparked the deadly sequence as onlookers witnessed the tragedy.

Indianapolis Aug 17 9000 to 10000 people greeted General Harrison with about 7000 said to have shaken his hand. Delegations from Ohio Indiana and Illinois attended University Park where addresses praised the Republican party for free discussion and loyalty to the flag. The general spoke about tolerance for political differences and the duty to defend Confederate soldiers voting rights before spending two hours shaking hands and departing.
Washington Aug 17 the President has modified and commuted the court martial sentences of naval cadets found guilty of hazing. Confinement for 30 days and half of annual leave forfeited replace dismissal. He condemns hazing as unmanly and cowardly and warns this clemency not to set a precedent.
Jacksonville officials report thirty two yellow fever cases in and near the city three weeks after the first case. Four deaths eight recoveries and twenty still under treatment. In three days only four new cases and no deaths since Monday. City aims to stamp out outbreak within two to three weeks with cleansing and strong measures. New Orleans reports four new cases in Jacksonville.
