Allied forces begin a Siberian landing from the Philippines as American troops reach Russian soil. Units push from Archangel while British forces land at Baku on the Caspian Sea. Three strategic routes to Russia are now in operation.
In East Corinth Maine, Miss Cora Norton, long known in female garb, reveals she is a man named Mr Eugene Cody Norton. Norton and Miss Abby E. Foster wed today in Governor Milliken's office at Augusta, after a startling departure from prior identity and a trip to the White Mountains.
Devens August 15. Wholesale transfers move personnel between depot brigade infantry regiments and the 35th and 36th machine gun battalions to finish organizing the 12th division. Captain Samuel Stern moves to organize the sanitary train as Lt Col R A Smith arrives as acting commander of headquarters trains and military police. Major A B Jones joins as assistant camp surgeon.
Thirty indictments were returned by the Suffolk county grand jury in a fish price fixing case. The Bay State Fishing Company group includes eminent financiers and major fish handlers who allegedly conspired to raise prices, with Boston supplying most cod and haddock for the nation.
Late yesterday afternoon the first arrests occurred as Arthur Wainwright a company director appeared in Superior Criminal Court and was held on 200 bail by Judge Hitchcock. John Burns Jr general manager earns 12000 yearly. Samuel McIntyre Jr of John R Neal Company and Joseph A Rich appeared at the district attorney s office and were bailed by Commissioner William Dyer.
Five young men were slightly injured and five escaped unhurt when a car on Adams street near Thomas street in East Milton crashed before midnight. John W. Sullivan of Brighton was arrested for operating under the influence and faces a reckless driving charge. Four passengers in Sullivan’s car fled before police arrived. The other vehicle involved belonged to Projector Garage of East Milton. Alexander Howie Jr and others suffered various hurts, with Anderson knocked unconscious and Kerr shaken up.
The British steamer Penistone was torpedoed at close range and sunk 100 miles east of Nantucket. On arrival at Nantucket, executive officer Benjamin Davies reported a fourth engineer killed and four firemen wounded. survivors said the attack occurred without warning.
The Penistone’s captain who returned to his ship to recover papers was captured by the U boat and held as a prisoner of war. Also an advertisement for Horsford's Acid Phosphate describes a summer tonic drink that is healthful and agreeable to the taste, refreshing and invigorating.
British forces advance northwest of Roye seizing the villages of Dame ry and Parvillers while French troops on the southern wing capture two farms near Lassigny, pushing back enemy lines as Somme Oise fighting continues.
Allied report states German forces are falling back between Albert and Arras with Beaumont Hamel Serre Bucquoy and Puisieux au Mont abandoned. The British advance tracks the German retreat as they cross the Ancre River and firm contact is kept. No official reason for the retrograde movement has been given.
Frederick H. Prince Jr. of Prides Crossing, formerly with the Lafayette Escadrille, is commissioned a first lieutenant in the Labor Battalion of the Quartermaster's Corps and sails to join his company at Camp Johnston Jacksonville Fla. He is the brother of aviator Norman Prince and son of Boston banker Frederick H. Prince.
General March, chief of staff, said four million troops can defeat Germany and the War Department plans for more than that number next summer. About 3,200,000 soldiers, or 80 divisions, would be in France by June 30 under these plans.
Brockton shoe cutters tasters vampers and stitchers will return Monday after a five week strike. Officials of the Independent Cutters Association and Army Quartermaster's Office agreed to resume work under conditions to be set by the Federal War Labor Board, with board investigation into Brockton labor issues.
Paris Aug 15 The Journal Officiel reports American ace Lieutenant David B Putnam of Newton Massachusetts was decorated for valor. The citation commends his skill and daring and notes he downed one enemy plane in a patrol of nine, then two more in escort duty the next day, earning his fifth and sixth victories and three mentions in despatches. He has added further victories since.
Allied troops including British French Japanese and American units push south from Archangel and west from Vladivostok to assist Czecho Slovaks as Bolshevik forces retreat. British force holds at Baku Caspian Sea as new despatches report advances.
In a 1914 wartime note, a British naval squadron engages and damages a German destroyer and several mine sweepers in the North Sea. The text also recalls past events such as the British Expeditionary Force in France, a Russian advance, and Leo Frank’s 1915 execution, with a note on Prohibition-era rules from a year ago.
