Former Congressman Joseph F. O Connell publicly denounces ex Mayor Fitzgerald s bid for the Senate and says he will not run himself. The attack links with ex Governor Walsh who backed Fitzgerald s challenger amid a tight political rift in the state.
O Connell states that ex-Governor Walsh did not encourage Fitzgerald and is disgusted that a man like Fitzgerald would seek the United States Senate. He predicts Fitzgerald’s overwhelming defeat and denounces his pro ally sentiments and sneering remarks at Irish patriots.
In Brockton August 16 the court backed defence counsel Owen F Davis as City Solicitor W M Wilbur clashed over long questioning. Judge Herbert C Thorndyke, a longtime Democrat, admonished the exchange but expressed agreement with Mr Davis on the matter.
Giuseppe Cianfloni, 21, fired 12 shots from his West Main street home injuring a woman, two men, then killed himself with the 13th. Mrs Neal Johnson, Frank Scavo, and Giuseppe Astorino were treated for non life threatening wounds at North Adams Hospital. Cianfloni was found unconscious with the pistol.
French and British forces mounted a massive push on the Somme front storming three miles of German trench lines and penetrating 300 to 500 yards beyond. A devastating bombardment left German trenches in ruins with many dead and prisoners taken, according to French reports.
British and French troops advance north from the point where allied lines meet. Maurepas and Clery, key German positions, are flanked on both sides according to Paris. The road between Maurepas and Guillemont is reached as Combles looms as the immediate objective.
A conspiracy to manufacture and circulate one million dollars in counterfeit silver certificates and treasury notes was thwarted by government agents led by William J. Flynn. Eight arrests followed raids on a Grant City Staten Island house and an East Ninth Street location in Manhattan.
Secret service agents report a complete counterfeiting operation unearthed with photographic gear lithographic presses electrotyping and etching tools ink and paper. Two men held as operators planned to print up to a million dollars then destroy the plant. Seventy negatives of genuine bills were prepared amid a high cost setup and additional materials used in plating and etching.
Machinists at Winchester Repeating Arms in New Haven voted to strike at noon tomorrow if the company does not grant an eight hour day and concessions. Thomas J. Savage of the IAM executive committee says 2500 union members are ready. a walkout could draw in 10,000 metal trades workers. The plant employs about 18,000.
In Portsmouth New Hampshire on August 16 Miss May Richardson of Somerville Massachusetts finally marries Willis W. Hidden a leading man with the Willis W. Hidden Stock Company based in Newburyport Massachusetts and a matinee idol in Essex County.
In Newburyport Miss May Richardson wavered over a marriage to actor Mr Hidden. After three visits to ministers Rev. Charles Morrill and Rev. Arthur Gooding the couple finally married at 40 Court Street with the ceremony completed unimpeded.
A Wal ter L. Jackson truck driven by Melvin L. Dell swerved off the road and struck the fruit store of Joseph Caccici at 59 Franklin street Quincy at 6 30 last night. The storefront was demolished and Howard B. Jackson, the owner’s son, sustained severe cuts and bruises and was taken home to Wollaston by police ambulance.
Richard F Hamilton known as Tody Hamilton, veteran newspaper man and longtime press agent for the Barnum & Batley circus, died at his Baltimore home. He was about 70 and famed for colorful advertising phrases describing the circus wonders.
Aug 16 fire devastated the Notre Dame parochial school run by the Sisters of Holy Cross. Flames threatened the Holy Cross Convent and church complex but mitigation kept the danger from spreading. Damages exceed 40000 dollars. One firefighter collapsed from smoke but recovered. no occupants were inside the building.
Suspicion of arson followed an hour before the alarm when sisters heard noises and called Adams police. Patrolman Conroy found no intruders but smoke appeared on the third floor at 9 30 pm. Volunteers from the Alert Fire Company arrived too late to save the upper floors as the convent church and rectory were protected on the first floor and basement.
Patrick Callaghan, said to be American, was arrested after a scuffle while attempting to force an entrance into Windsor Castle to see King George. He was deemed insane and sent to an asylum. he claimed to be the original submarine inventor and had spent 11 years in a U S asylum.
Boston defended its two game lead over Chicago with a 5 to 4 win in 16 innings followed by a 2 to 1 victory in six innings. The rally showcased the Red Sox grit as they shaded the White Sox in both ends of the doubleheader.
Nearly 26 000 fans filled Fenway Park for two games this season. The first game lasted 16 innings with Hart Hooper scoring the winning run. The second game ended due to darkness after Boston led 2 1 at five and a half innings.
In the American League Boston beat Chicago 5 to 4 in 16 innings for the first game and Boston won 2 to 1 in six innings of the second game. New York defeated Cleveland 5 to 3. Rain halted Detroit Washington and St Louis Philadelphia games. In the National League Chicago defeated Cincinnati 5 to 0. In the Eastern League Lynn outscored Hartford 9 to 4 and New Haven beat Lowell 4 to 3. Worcester defeated Lawrence 5 to 1 and New London edged Springfield 3 to 2 11 Portland 8 Bridgeport 1.
In Brownsville Texas Corporal James Clement of the Second Virginia Regiment was shot dead while assisting Sophia Valdez a Mexican girl who was allegedly attacked by a fellow corporal named Dunches. Dunches fled then surrendered at the county jail. Clement 28 from Warrenton Virginia left a widow.
Division 4 A. O. H. South End to escort speakers for mass meeting at Faneuil Hall protesting Sir Roger Casement's execution. Captain A. B. Roberts and Lt. William M. Collins lead, reporting at 7 30 at Dean Hall 1651 Washington Street in full uniform.
A mass meeting of conductors and motormen of the New York Railways Company resolves to strike forthwith if the company does not grant union recognition. Carmen leaders are authorized to suspend work on all lines if a satisfactory conference is not reached by tomorrow after four days of noncompliance with employee requests.
The resolutions accuse the company of discharging employees active in the strike and of promoting a plan to select committeemen to represent workers in future grievances. Mayor Mitchel and Public Service Commission Chairman Straus were summoned to attend a conference. Theodore P. Shants of IRT and New York Railways denied unlawful dismissals and cited rule violations by some employees endangering passenger safety.
Massachusetts Senator Lodge New Mexico Senator Fall and Governor McCall lead the Dorchester Republican Club summer outing. Dinner at 2 PM features Guy Hani presiding and George A. Douglass chairing the outing committee.
President Wilson outlined a plan to settle a nationwide railroad strike and will present it to managers and workers. The plan calls for an eight hour work day with enforcement and possibly a federal commission to study issues. Managers demand arbitration and oppose overtime pay raises while employees seek time and a half for overtime.
Reports from The Hague via London say a German probe uncovers a wide food fraud scheme involving about a dozen leaders and many accomplices. Wheat rye and barley flour were smuggled from West Prussia to Berlin and sold at large profits while eluding stock takers, with some officials and station masters named as conspirators.
The body of Morris Sakanoff a 23 year old salesman in the wholesale flour business was brought back to his home at 8 Seneca Street South End last evening. He went on his annual two week vacation Monday after starting work.

William D. Hughes warned the nation that postwar commercial problems would be severe. He urged saving the country daily, condemning abuses, and building national unity through loyal, organized enterprise and prepared government. He spoke to the Portland Advertising Club and noted Oregon’s pivotal role before a four hour Columbia highway ride.
