Congress votes to authorize a three year naval buildup creating a second fleet power. Of 157 ships and 74 700 sailors, 35 Democrats and 15 Republicans support the plan. The expansion includes battleships cruisers destroyers submarines tenders and support vessels with an aviation budget adding to the strength.
Congress effectively completed the national defence plan by approving major naval construction and staffing boosts. The House endorsed the building programme 283 to 51 after conferees split, while personnel expansion received approval without a recorded vote as administration support held firm.
The note indicates that the personnel and construction sections have approval and the story continues on page 6 fifth column.
William Reid Brodie two years old of Dorchester loses fatherless family after being killed in action in France. He served with the 15th machine gun company Australia and enlisted in Melbourne spring 1915. He was struck in the chest by a shell on July 19 and died a few hours later.
Miss Evelyn Knowlton of Addison Street Essex was pinned under a car on the Hamilton road near Myopia Hunt Club. Rose Knowlton and Asenath Tarr, both of Essex, were thrown from the vehicle. Evelyn suffered a left hip fracture and five left rib fractures. she was hospitalized at Beverly. The other two suffered only bruises and shock.
Russian forces press into Hungary with the capture of Jablonitza at the head of the Jab lonitza Pass in the Carpathians. The Petrograd war office says the offensive continues, placing Budapest within 250 miles by air line.
Northward, Russian forces push drives against Austrian lines with apparent success as troops flood the Zlota Lipa at multiple crossings despite fierce resistance. The report notes continued Russian momentum and mounting pressure on enemy positions.
Four Revere youths escaped drowning when their 18 foot canoe capsized one mile off Bass Point Nahant. The Machigonne and Patchogue lifeboats rescued Frank W. Cabe 21 Francis Bush 17 Timothy Brown 15 and L F Killick 19. Cabe was delirious and rushed to a Lynn hospital. Killick convalescing from surgery also received medical care.
In Jersey City Mr. and Mrs. Charles Koch began housekeeping at 1144 Hutton Street after a spirit message during a trance wedding led by Mrs. Annie Stewart of the Mt. Pitcairn Spiritualist Church. The ceremony occurred in the Pols home parlor with a written blessing invoking Alhambra.
Edward Lauterbach a leading New York lawyer and former political figure testified before a grand jury as Edward A. Leet of 606 West 104th Street faced an indictment for extortion and threats to Lauterbach. The case follows Lauterbach's earlier confrontation with Mr and Mrs Leet in West Side Court over alleged street harassment.
Lauterbach told the grand jury today he was blackmailed by the Leets for 18 years totaling $100,000. He presented letters threatening exposure and his check books to verify payments cited in the indictment.
Harvard Summer School of Physical Education report shows the strongest woman exceeds 40 percent of men in tests of leg grip and chest strength, with men averaging about one third stronger. Miss Mabel Georgine Furry leads women at 459. Theodore C. Hudson Jr leads men at 697. Other top men include Walter A. Boyd and James Baldwin. top women include Carrie M. Frost and Edith R. Hastings.
Samuel Gompers responds to Senator Sherman who labeled him a public nuisance in the Senate. He says he cannot be arbitrary or tyrannical and insists he has no power to bind or direct votes of AF of L members or groups.
Fire at the Jameson Brothers stable on Henley and Park streets Charlestown killed fifteen horses and seriously damaged the property. Four horses were shot to end their suffering as flames raged through the building. Forty horses were saved but the three alarm blaze threatened nearby tenement districts. Loss is estimated between twenty thousand and twenty five thousand dollars.
Charles E. Hughes told a Tacoma audience at Stadium that he would not shrink from potential war to defend American rights abroad. He read the 1912 Democratic platform and urged turning its pledge into reality without fearing war if necessary.
About 8 30 the old two story tinder box stable in the navy yard district caught fire. Ten minutes elapsed before discovery and the whole structure burned. Horse noises echoed as T J Lamiette and W W Cronin organized a volunteer rescue and with first arriving firemen attempted to save the horses. Several tons of equipment and animals were endangered.
Policeman Owen J. Donnelly to have a medical exam today as counsel for David Sokol asserts illness and partial paralysis are unfounded. Sokol remains hospitalized with broken ribs after his arrest by Donnelly and Elan W. Morgan. A Jewish citizens committee is reportedly forming to raise funds and pursue action against the officers.
Mr Hughes centers remarks on the need for a protective tariff to build and sustain American industries. He rebuts opponents who claimed tariff plans would lower living costs and cites 1912 Democratic platform. He notes McAdoo emergency currency and the Vreeland law as Republican safeguards during the war start.
Thomas Horne a 4 year old farm hand in Westbrook Maine was jailed after his love for the Dearborns’ 15 year old daughter led to two suicide attempts with rat poison and a firearm. Police monitor him at Westbrook station while awaiting disposition of the case.
In Seattle Hughes denounces the Wilson administration on preparedness. He claims the navy is under manned and short of supplies and pledges to ensure efficient leadership for the army and navy if elected. He insists a nation must be ready for every emergency and rejects being labeled militaristic.
John F. Fitzgerald declared his decision to run against Senator Lodge after talks with ex Governor Walsh and Democratic leaders. He spoke from State Street office inviting questions from reporters. Wilson issued a statement saying earnest effort continues to settle the rail strike.
The ex-Mayor dismisses Foss as a fakir and says Foss left the Democratic party for the Republicans after a real fight. He accuses Foss of being finished and rambling since the switch.
Larry Gardner delivered a timely single to center in the 13th inning to score the decisive run as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Washington Senators 1 to 0 after more than two and a half hours of play. The win extended the champions lead in a tense afternoon showdown.
Police announce an investigation today into Swiss aviator Jean Domenjoz who flew over Boston without a permit. He departed Readville at 5:07 pm and circled the Custom House tower seven times before returning at high speed, drawing thousands of spectators to rooftops and streets.
Gardner’s hit decided the third pitching duel of 1916 between Walter Johnson and Babe Ruth. Ruth had fallen to Johnson twice before this summer with 1 to 0 scores, and yesterday the same result repeated.
At a New Hampshire State Grange outing in Hampton Falls on August 15 a dynamiting soil demonstration caused rocks to rain down. Lawrence B. True, 19, of Hampton, suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Cottage Hospital in Exeter in critical condition. A score of others were struck by rock fragments but spared serious injury.
John M. Crowley Lawrence Giike and Andrew Carroll pleaded nolo contendere in Central Municipal Court after running up a $100 joy ride bill on July 27. The trio claimed to be Cambridge politicians and faced earlier charges of refusing to pay automobile hire.
Baseball results show Condon force innings in a first game with heavy scoring. Second game sees New Haven beating Lynn 4 to 8, Springfield defeating Lawrence 6 to 2, and Hartford overcoming Lowell 7 to 5.

After talks with President Wilson, the employees sub committee asked New York to summon 640 general committee members to Washington. They are due here Thursday and may meet the President Friday while the managers’ committee meets again tomorrow. White House statements said discussions were ongoing with no results yet. Arbitration is unlikely but eight hour day concessions may be possible through negotiations. The President favored direct conferences and an investigative commission, with the option to appoint one.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for generally fair weather on Wednesday and Thursday with little temperature change. Light to moderate westerly winds expected as previously noted in the New England forecast.
