PORTSMOUTH Aug. 16 The talks on Russo Japan peace progress as Japanese acceptance comes on seven of eight debated articles. The sticking point remains Sakhalin and indemnity terms. Arthur M. Witte reports efforts to advance the accord and reach a final understanding.
At a crossing near the Connecticut River bridge in Walpole two Vermont farmers, John Leach and Langdon Langdon, were killed when a frightened horse dragging their carriage moved into an express train. Leach, 42, broke every bone and died. Jenna, 40, died in a pool of water. The horse also perished.
Brockton Aug 16 George L Marsh of 758 Centre street entered Plymouth jail smiling after Chicago police named him suspect in the death of William Bate He is held without bail awaiting Chicago detectives arrival Marsh had used crutches from an accident but showed nerve while claiming innocence in the murder inquiry
A limestone rockslide at Mill A near Orm on in Allen town Penn killed 12 Slavonian workers and injured six while 27 were at work. The ore was 100 feet deep and 150 feet wide. Rescue teams used block and tackle to reach survivors, finding eight bodies by nightfall.
President Roosevelt and lawmakers discussed federal supervision of interstate insurance at Sagamore Hill. James M. Beck, special counsel to Mutual Life Insurance, chartered a special train after missing his regular one to meet the President. Senator Dryden of New Jersey expressed support and noted a previous Senate bill proposing supervisory control by the bureau of corporations.
Acting Inspector Mc Cauley reports the capture of two men posing as farm hands Alexander Smith and John Ratchesky suspected of robbing farmers in Billerica Arlington Sudbury Bedford Lexington Danvers and Essex. They face charges for breaking and entering Mrs Finns office at 14 Parmenter Street on July 29 and an attempted larceny. Ratchesky faces an additional larceny from Julius Schuchack after knockout drugs. Police across 20 towns north of Boston were notified of the arrests.
Six persons killed as a north bound Santa Fe passenger train crashed into a freight in Santa Ana California. The wreck occurred at night with casualties reported from the collision involving multiple rail cars. Authorities investigated the cause of the impact.

An electric car crashed into a Salvation Army parade near Old Orchard Hill Camp Ground injuring members and killing Fitzsimmons of the Port Army Industrial Home. The accident occurred around 8 o'clock on August 8 as marchers passed the open-air service. Motorman George helped free victims after the car dragged Fitzsimmons 30 feet under its forward trucks and needed jacks to lift the vehicle.
Catherine Keating of 38 Eighth Street East Cambridge says she was assaulted at her home shortly after 10 PM. She fell down stairs, broke her wrist and lost several teeth, and was taken to General Hospital. Joseph Smith, 31, of the same address, was arrested for drunkenness and booked.
Vienna labor action reports all city factories halted as workmen walked out today seeking concessions and better conditions. The stoppage affects multiple plants and may disrupt production in the capital.
The city graft case involves bribe penalties for elected and board members under a 1902 statute. Alderman Bromberg is absent in New York. others received summons as inspectors Norton McGarr and Morrisey pursued the probe. Linehan reports a direct offer to Captain Dugan, which he declined, with clues to be shared with a grand jury.

John Cary, 10, of 194 Bridge Street, fell from a small shed beside a new temporary bridge in East Cambridge and drowned with hundreds watching. Patrolman William McEwen leaped in fully clothed to try rescue. he too exhausted and the boy's body had not been recovered by late night.
