A major price reduction is announced across the Men's and Boys Clothing sections with two weeks of special mark down sale starting Friday August 11. All clothing is produced in the company workshops. The in-store department also offers by the yard a rich line of light weight woollen fabrics at less than half value, suitable for ladies wear.
In Middletown Connecticut on August 15 John Treadwell a 12 year old boy who began a trek last spring to walk 2000 miles from Nebraska to Higganum arrived in Higganum exhausted and destitute. His father formerly lived there and died in 1887 while his mother moved to Nebraska and died in 1883. The boy started with no money and died before reaching two uncles living near Higganum village.
A Baltic Sea storm off Hapsal near Revel overwhelmed a fishing fleet. Many boats foundered and seventeen men are confirmed drowned with many more missing.
Amherst Mass August 15 Mary Danahy thirty years old hanged herself from an apple tree in South Amherst this morning. Authorities report she was temporarily deranged. The incident occurred near her home and is under investigation.
A Boston and Maine freighter brakeman named John Crowley, about 26, was killed at Wilmington Junction while shackling cars on a Portland to Boston run. Officials believe he fell between the cars and was dragged against a wooden track splice. He lived in Charlestown. his father resides in Rutland Vermont.
Major Clinton B. Sears of Philadelphia in the U S A Engineer Corps and his wife were injured in a runaway accident at Newport on August 15. Sears suffered a broken left arm in two places and finger dislocations. his wife was badly bruised. They were taken to a summer cottage at Jamestown and are reported doing well.
In Keenhn, New Hampshire, an unknown man attempting to steal a ride on a Boston and Maine freight from South Vernon suffered a fatal accident in the railroad yard. He struck his head on a water tank, was crushed as the train passed, mangling him beyond recognition. Initials J. B. were found on his wrist and a star on his arm.
Shepard Norwell & Co advertises a sale offering 500 dozen shirts in mostly new patterns aimed at a wide audience, promising event-like value and fashion options for customers.
In Washington on August 15 Senator Lodge engages in a heated discussion over proposed currency reforms. Gordon introduces a bill to suspend state bank note taxation for six months to ease the panic, arguing repeal of the Sherman Act could lower interest rates. Lodge supports prompt action and warns of factory and employment distress in New England.
The Senate debated moving the cotton crop issue, with the bill referred to the finance committee. Voorhees reported a finance committee agreed bill increasing national bank circulation to par value of bonds. Cockrell opposed immediate consideration of the bill. The bill was postponed. Also discussed were prompt mileage for Senators and a substitute by Butler linking repeal and free coinage measures. Hunton spoke on the Lee Mantle case as Lodge’s resolution to repeal Sherman Act purchasing clauses was laid before the body.
The GOP talks nationwide of Albert E. Pillsbury for governor with boomers backing him. At 44 tomorrow he seeks the nomination, having served in the Legislature as Senate president and as attorney general. Harvard alumnus and Boston resident Pillsbury is viewed as the strongest candidate, despite rivals Hart and Greenhalge.
In Brockton on August 15 the tenth Thompson trial session drew large church crowds. Pastor Thompson and Mrs. Swift testified amid sharp exchanges. The court wrestled with the Newton affair as witnesses and detectives clashed in a tense, sarcatic town meeting atmosphere.
