Protective Tariff Debate On Cost and Benefit
An academic critique of high tariffs estimates the total annual cost to Americans at about 1.2 billion dollars, funded by citizens through taxes and duties. The piece argues most benefits flow to manufacturers, not workers, and that consumer prices rise while wage gains are limited, challenging Republican claims of broad wage boost from protectionism. It links tariff policy to political bribery of special interests and frames the choice as moderate protection versus expansive tariff power.
