Mrs Cornelius Vanderbilt met with a severe accident in Newport while riding a victoria on Bellevue avenue. Her carriage collided with a dogcart carrying two ladies. her own carriage was demolished and she was taken to her home after initial aid at John Jacob Astor’s cottage. The coachman was injured and the horses narrowly avoided falling from the cliffs. Mr Vanderbilt was at his Portsmouth farm.

Nathaniel W Cumner of Cumner Jones Co tailors trimmings 83 Summer street died suddenly yesterday at the Atlantic House Nantasket from apoplexy. Born Wayne Missouri November 29 1829 he learned tailoring, worked in Manchester and Washington before forming Cumner Co and later Cumner Jones Co. He served in various masonic roles and helped organize Amoskeag Veterans. He married Moses Wadley’s daughter in 1856 and left two sons Harry W and Arthur.

Charles H. Avery alias Atwood, long sought for forgery, was arrested in Cambridge at 6 pm by Detective Harriman and Patrolman Pike and turned over to Boston officers. He faces charges for forging two checks of 69 and 160 dollars, obtaining funds from Henry W. Holland in November, and forging lawyer Edward Q. Howard's name. Avery, a house painter by trade, has prior convictions and once decorated the chapel at Concord State Prison. He formerly lived in Waltham.
