August Belmonts Mineola, a 70 foot sloop, won the $500 Astor cup for sloops with a 1 minute 6 second margin over Cornelius Vanderbilts Rainbow in a brisk race from Brenton's Reef Lightship to the Vineyard Sound Lightship and back. The Corona defeats and Quissetta, Yankee, and Hester finish among others amid strong easterly winds and heavy seas.

O'Connor Vacationing in Boston Returns as Norwich Backstop

Eugene O'Connor formerly of the Post is in Boston on a brief vacation while a broken finger heals. He will resume his role as backstop for the Norwich team in the Connecticut League on Monday. Manager Hanlon favors the double umpire system though the league suffers from its current inefficiency. Emilie is praised by Hanlon as the best umpire before the public. Michael to meet Nelson in Bridgeport twenty five mile race

At Bridgeport yesterday managers Kennedy Spooner Rich and Kelsey reached a settlement for a twenty five mile race between Jimmy Michael and Johnnie Nelson on August 22. Kennedy agreed to pay advertising expenses and other concessions to the track to offset losses from the previous meet and posted a substantial forfeit to ensure Michael's appearance. The NC A board may refrain from suspension as Rich does not push Michael to the limit.
