The District Court of Massachusetts upholds Beckwith Box Toe Company patents on the Vulco-Unit box toe and the lasting process. The decision covers patent Nos. 1,070,406 and 1,124,694, describing a heated, softened stiffener that forms the toe and sets on cooling, remaining unaffected by moisture or foot heat. The Vulco-Unit box toe and method are now in wide use among leading U S shoe factories.
The steam yacht Condor ran aground on a reef off Baker's Island in fog while returning from Narragansett Pier to Marblehead with Miss Eleonora Sears and Mr. G Maurice Heckscher aboard. The crew abandoned to life boats but the vessel did not sink. A fisherman in a small boat ferried the party to Marblehead and the Condor was later floated and towed to Boston for drydocking. The ship, 175 feet long, is under charter to Mr. Heckscher.
At Sandy Hook New York on August 11 an unusual wireless call for Telefunken station New York was heard at 1 50 this morning. The Sea Gate station replied Telefunken was closed and ignored inquiries about the sender. The message suggested the German submarine Bremen may be nearby before the war ships used Telefunken calls.
Even as Bremen awaits word, officials in Berlin remain ignorant about the submarine Bremen. Reports from London note the vessel may have sailed but no date or destination is confirmed.
In Detroit on August 10 probate opens for the will of Mrs. Lizzie Merrill Palmer widow of Senator Thomas W. Palmer. The will provides for an establishment of a school to teach girls motherhood.
Probate court estimates the estate at over 1 million dollars with the residue supporting founding and operating a school in Detroit or Greenfield Township. Ten legacies totaling 135,000 are paid first. The will guarantees free board for girls unable to pay and aims to uplift community welfare through motherhood and home spirit. Admission begins at age ten.
Berga Mortensen, a Norwegian aboard the Bar Harbor 31 footer Cricket owned by T. K. Lothrop Jr., was knocked overboard during a Corinthian Yacht Club race near Tom Moore's Rock. A heavy sea drove him from the vessel as he tended a masthead runner. the crew tried to reach him but he disappeared beneath the waves.
An imperial dispatch from Petrograd reported by Reuters says Emperor Nicholas II presented General A. A. Brusiloff with a diamond adorned sword of the Order of St. George in recognition of his military victories over Austrian and German forces in Galicia and Volhynia.
The Massachusetts Anti-Saloon League headquarters committee warned Boston could become a wide open city if the Licensing Board fails to follow statute law as urged by the Governor. The group met yesterday and issued a statement on the controversy surrounding the board’s duties.
The headquarters committee questions Governor's view of board authority and asks if he would set aside several licensing rules affecting drink service to women, hotel license suspensions, treating on the house, and saloon proximity to private schools, arguing that past licensing actions raised moral standards. Superintendent Arthur J. Davis of the league presided over the committee meeting.
Esther E Popple of Boston sues Stephen M Saraf an Oriental rug dealer alleging a five thousand dollar kiss demand. The suit was filed yesterday in which Saraf resides at 372 Boylston Street and Popple's residence is given as 563 Columbus Avenue.
Miss Popple charges Saraf with kidnapping and assault alleging he held her prisoner and forcibly kissed her on February 26. The bill was filed yesterday in Suffolk Court and the case is expected for trial likely in the October session.
David Sokol of a West End lodging house was badly beaten by Patrolmen Owen J. Donnelly and Elan W. Morgan at Joy Street station. Police say Sokol resisted arrest and his family joined in, kicking officers and a knife being used. The incident is linked to an alleged police graft case involving Abraham Lichnick.
Sokol is hospitalized at Relief Hospital with three broken ribs a scalp wound and facial contusions after a brawl at 24 Stamford Street. His wife, her mother, and a 17 year old son Hyman aided during the attack. Officers Donnelly and Morgan served a warrant for assault upon Esther Goodman of 14 Ashland Street. Sokol refused to accompany them and said he would not enter Joy Street station. The officers proceeded with arrest.

In Georgetown on Aug 10 Miss Dorothy Estes of Lowell a Perkins Institution teacher drowned attempting to救 Bessie Stenosky a 15 year old Chelsea pupil who waded beyond her depth. A dozen blind children watched helplessly as the two sank. only the witnesses could see Miss Estes' sister Barbara 12 could see.
Henry Longfellow arrived at the pond shortly after 3 pm hoping to save Miss Estes. He pulled her from the water and tended her for an hour without success. The second body was recovered two hours later. Miss Estes had led her blind pupils from the Longfellow home to a shelving beach for their daily wading.
In Keene New Hampshire on August 10 Mrs Eugene Weeks was shot three times at her Westport Village home and her 7 year old son Charles wounded lightly. Police hunt for the husband alleged to have fired the shots. Weeks’ coat later found on the Ashuelot River bank.
Two Roslindale men Thomas H. Souler of Ireson Street and Fred W. Whittemore of Sagamore Street were paddling a trail craft from Gloucester to Boston when a heavy sea at Nahant Beach capsized their canoe. Lifeguard Everett F. Parks saved them.
The Daily Chronicle reports Lord Lansdowne may resign due to failing health. He is a cabinet member without portfolio and has faced criticism over the stalled Irish home rule negotiations.
