A skiff was overturned by heavy seas as men in a power boat tried to reach them. Life guards battled waves and approached the scene but the person in the water sank before aid could be sustained.
Charles B. Turner, a Malden letter carrier, drowned when his skiff capsized amid heavy seas off Plum Island. Five life guards stood within three feet, ready to rescue Turner and two companions aboard the disabled motor cruiser Florence of Boston, which was being driven off shore.
James Hooten and J Ripley with others on a motor boat at Russell Street Malden were rescued by Newburyport coast guardsmen who towed them to Portsmouth. Turner, left behind, may have reached shore in a vain effort to aid others and was not saved. The rescuers reportedly could have saved Turner if informed of his attempt.
Reports from New York indicate persistent rumor of the Bremen approaching the port or lurking off the harbor. A North German Lloyd ship was moved to free a pier, with two barges moored nearby to form a protective enclosure, mirroring the Deutschland incident at Baltimore.
The Supreme Court will hear the redistricting dispute in September and a special Legislature session is likely to fix the nomination filing date from August 19 to before September 10. Governor McCall is said to agree to convene the Continuent.

Thomas P McCue son of Patrick H McCue a Dorchester contractor is believed drowned this afternoon as three others were saved from drowning during one of the heaviest seas of mid summer at Old Orchard Maine.
A 19 year old Boston youth from 29 Speedwell street Dorchester and three companions swam at the beach when a heavy undertow swept them out. Joseph Duncan a volunteer lifeguard and others attempted rescues. Duncan was knocked unconscious but revived. McCue remained missing after hours of searching and his body was not recovered.
