Wives of militia officers in El Paso learned that General Bell refused to allow militia officers planning temporary homes in the city to live outside camp. Many had rented bungalows or intended to join their husbands, but the order keeps them in camp facilities.
Several Massachusetts militia officers have brought their wives to the camp and others are en route. Some have hired bungalows and begun housekeeping while others plan similar steps. Officers hoped for evening home leave, but artillery headquarters announced this would not be granted.
The federal public health service urged state health authorities to send representatives to a August 17 conference in Washington to discuss stopping the spread of infantile paralysis. Officials stress no panic but emphasize a coordinated, organized fight, with plans for closer cooperation and a focus on treatment methods.
Copenhagen reports increasing agitation against selling the Danish West Indies. McAfee ferried Harvey to Lawrence then to Hamp shire street where a pistol fired. Harvey, with a revolver, admitted to killing himself and was taken to General Hospital. Police note a possible female involvement as the case unfolds.
Police rush to Avalon road home after a false report of a husband shooting himself. Charles H. Chick lies uninjured on a couch with a spent six inch cannon cracker nearby. Mrs Chick reports the scene and the couple settle their dispute by arbitration.
