Confidence and silver policy drive national stagnation

The author links wage satisfaction and high labor costs to a broader slump in business. He traces the decline to government silver purchases under the Bland-Allison and Sherman acts, noting prices fell as silver output was bought and coinized. Repeal of the Sherman act halted the slide, but distrust remains. The remedy urged is to retire endless chain notes, have banks issue currency, and restore confidence to spur production and consumption.

Unions Regulate Wages Across Nations

A letter argues wages fall to subsistence levels unless unions raise or defend them. It contrasts Mexico China and Japan with the United States and England, noting weak or absent unions in some countries and stronger organization in others. The piece cites Lynn Falls River Birmingham and London bricklayers to illustrate wage differences and the need for circulating money to combat hoarding.

Baseless as the fabric of a dream letter note

A reader defends the cost discussion on corn and wheat amid economic shifts. He argues wheat prices dropped compared to twenty years ago due to railroads in India and Russia, improved industrial control in Egypt since British occupation, and rapid agricultural progress in South America especially Argentina, reflecting supply and demand balances.

Lawyering on gold and silver price theory in 1896 Boston

He critiques silverite and goldite plans, warns of abolishing private contracts, and questions Supreme Court packing by silver advocates. Boston, August 9, 1896.

A Little Political Economy in Opinion from Cambridge

The writer argues that the present system relies on self interest and dollar stock, causing unemployment if jobs do not increase the giver’s dollars. It questions whether two-dollar per job or a silver dollar standard would ensure full employment and warns that mutual job sharing could erode the need for labor value, ending in a self-defeating economy.

The Power of an Honest Dollar

A critical analysis warns that if silverites gain control a bifurcated economy will emerge with gold for the wealthy and unstable silver for the poor. It argues minority power, backed by wealth, would outlast majority rule and force contracts to be written on gold slips, leaving laborers with uncertain wages and two currencies.

Arguing for a Double Standard in Money

George Dutton argues for a return to a bimetallic standard with gold and silver and a full legal tender currency. He claims gold alone is unstable and that a labor unit should be the ultimate measure, warns against money bondage, and laments silver’s dethronement and outdated acts.
