A scorching warm day in Boston drove crowds to beaches and parks as humidity intensified discomfort. Hospitals reported greater strain, while steamboats and trains filled with city residents seeking sea air and shade. Readings showed 86 at 9 am, 92 at noon and 3 pm, then 88 by 6 pm.
The North Shore sweltered as 30 000 to 40 000 city and suburban residents sought relief on Crescent Beach. Temperatures reached 94 degrees at 8 pm with high humidity, while a steady breeze offered little comfort. Bath houses operated from 7 am to 9 pm as crowds queued for changing rooms and water crowds crowded the sea. Estimates say 2000 bathers filled the water between 8 am and 4 pm, creating a sea of heads offshore.

The unidentified rescuer had ventured too far on a log and could not swim, with the incline of the shore described as steep and deceptive. The rescued man’s fate and name remain unconfirmed.
A Chicago & Donegal electric car derailed after a gear wheel failure one mile outside Columbia Pennsylvania. Five people were killed and about forty injured, many expected to die. Victims include Chief Burgess H H Heiss of Columbia and motorman Adam Foehlinger. Seventeen more were treated at Columbia Hospital with aid from Lancaster physicians.
W S Heming way 22 a Santa Fe lawyer fatally wounded at a Bryan ratification meeting in Memphis. He was mid speech before about 2000, just after declaring Bryan seeks not money but the honest expression of the American people on the money question, when struck in the abdomen by an unknown shooter. He remains unconscious. Heming way served as assistant to US District Attorney Childress and is related to Senator George and Judge Wilson Hemingway of Little Rock. His sister is en route to his bedside.
A late night alarm at 9 03 reports a fire at W 8S Mitchell's lumber yard near Centre street and Highland station in West Roxbury. The blaze destroyed two dry-houses a two story building and a single story frame building with contents. estimated loss about 10000 dollars. Firemen contained the blaze after a brisk fight. cause is unknown.
