The District 7 board rejects nearly all exemption pleas heard to date. Applicants must show material harm to dependents and provide positive proof. A large share of men in District 7 failed to supply the required evidence and must serve in the army.
Regulations issued by Provost Marshal General Crowder outline the call up of 200000 of the first 687000 men on Sept 1 and their transport to camps by Sept 5. Local civilian boards will supervise assembling, shelter, food, and inducting draftees into military life, with no contact with officers until camps are reached.
The Ward 7 exemption board chaired by Dr. Walter R. Mansfield rejected the first 20 exemption claims based on dependents. Board members Freeman Emerson and William Conlon said dependents alone do not guarantee exemption as the dependents would likely not suffer if the man is drafted, especially if $30 pay and state aid are provided.
Taft family from Dorchester Mass traveling to Corning were struck by a passenger train on the Northern Central railroad. Rev Clinton J Taft wife and son Edward killed or fatally injured as auto was struck while crossing. Blind crossing blamed for accident.
Helen Taft age eight and Edith Taft age six died in a crossing collision as their father Mr Taft failed to see an oncoming train in gathering dusk. The Rev Taft formerly led Corning First Congregational Church before 1915 move to Dorchester.
Mrs Henry Lyndhurst Bruce formerly Camille Clifford an American actress from Boston Mass wed Captain John M J Evans of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in London on August 9 Her first husband was the eldest son and heir of Lord Aberdare and was killed in action in December 1914 while serving as a captain of the Royal Scots
Bernard Maloney aged 14 son of Mr and Mrs Bernard E Maloney of 82 Arlington Street was fatally injured when run over by a freight train near the Boston and Lowell bridge at about 4 PM Amputation of both legs and his right arm was deemed necessary and he was admitted to the General Hospital on the dangerous list with little hope of recovery.

A detective stunt by Mayor Curley during the heat wave led Boston officials to revoke the lease under which Henry E. Wanaker operates the Head House in South Boston. The move follows claims the bathing privileges were not fair to the public during the hot spell.
The mayor proposes a year round bathing facility at the Head House with a maximum 15 cent fee. He cites Wanaker for charging 25 cents during a hot spell despite a lease requiring 10 cent baths and lockers. He says he will revoke the lease after a two week notice if Wanaker’s violations persist.

A man visiting the home of Mrs Wallin’s employer on West street Dedham shot his wife after a quarrel over money. Three shots hit the woman in the head neck and breast. police arrested the assailant, a former Marine Corps member claiming tuberculosis. He will be arraigned on murder charges.
Washington reports the Council of National Defence has decided to create a labor adjustment commission to settle wartime labor disputes in government contracting plants. The nine member body will have final jurisdiction, with contracts awarded only to those pledging to accept its awards and require employee pledges to comply. Members have not yet been named.
