Mayor Gaynor Shot Aboard Ship Near Europe Start

Early this morning Mayor William J. Gaynor was shot by James Gallagher a discharged city employee on the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse as he began his vacation to Europe. Doctors say the head wound is dangerous but not necessarily fatal and they will avoid operation for now. The bullet split after entering the back of the head and recovery hinges on avoiding blood poisoning.

Man resembling Restelli arrested before Newfoundland voyage

A man who bore a strong resemblance to Luigi Restelli, the Quincy murderer, was arrested in North Sydney as he boarded the steamer Bruce bound for Newfoundland. He carried a loaded revolver and two cartridge boxes, claiming to be E Weisse of Richmond. Slips reading E Weisse 604 Williams Ave were found on him.

Hard to Be Punished This Way Says Gaynor

Mayor William J. Gaynor was shot and wounded aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse as he prepared for a month’s vacation. The assailant James J. Gallagher, a former city employee, was discharged July 19 from the docks and ferries department. The bullet pierced the right side of Gaynor’s neck. a later X ray showed fragments not requiring immediate surgery.

Albany Street Inferno Destroys Lumber District Amid Citywide Fire

A massive blaze on Albany Street wiped out up to a million dollars of property in the lumber district as 17 Boston firefighters were seriously injured. The fire, fought with outside aid and the new metropolitan system, threatened the South End and burned lumber piles, warehouses, and a manufacturing plant on High Street, prompting a daylong emergency response.

A major blaze on Loss-Albany Street and High Street caused $1,100,000 in damage and left 50 people homeless. Seventeen firefighters and six citizens were injured as Boston activated its first general alarm in 14 years.
