Mayor Fitzgerald charged widespread collusion between city assessors and wealthy tax dodgers across Massachusetts. He said Boston assessments are honest but if others followed suit the state tax would rise by about 200 million dollars and shift less burden to Boston.
Ex-captain Harry Lord of the Boston Americans returns to Boston from Cleveland after denying allegations he tried to undermine manager Patsy Donovan. Taylor confirms Lord sent home not due to conflict but because he was not needed on the current trip and will stay on salary pending a trade.

Aug 8 Lenox. Frank Mooney and Eugene Mohawk were harvesting when a large cow moose wandered inside Payne Whitney’s October Mountain preserve. The animal pinned Mooney to a tree for six hours until Mohawk lured it away with a graphophone playing Sweet Adeline, allowing Mooney to escape.
J Butler Swan of Marshall Virginia, a member of the Farquier county polo team, died at a Narragansett Pier hospital after a practice collision last Friday. He was thrown as his pony fell, sustaining internal injuries despite specialists from New York and Boston applying all life-saving efforts.

In Provincetown Aug 8 sailors from the battleship fleet are critically ill aboard the hospital ship Solace after drinking whiskey tainted with wood alcohol. Lieutenant Sellars, seizing 35 quarts in a raid, prompts court summons for two alleged sellers. No deaths yet. several remain in critical condition aboard the Solace.
Brockton Aug 8 Joe Walcott the colored pugilist bailed out Mrs Carrie Smith known as Big Carrie from Plymouth jail. The town and jail officials praised the fighter for his action and the woman is free until her larceny case is called and she weighs about 32612 pounds with a large appetite.
Gamaliel Bradford 3d, scion of a famed Boston family, killed himself in a Kendall Hotel room after rejected marriage plans with telegraph operator Elizabeth Corcoran from Bond & Goodwin Boston. He declared he could not live without her after she said she would marry Joe Kelly. Four pistol shots ended his life as onlookers heard the confrontation near the Boston & Albany station.
The forthcoming Harvard aviation meet at Squantum September 3 to 13 will feature a bomb throwing contest with a $5000 prize. Secretary of the Navy George von L. Meyer will send navy officials to observe. Officials aim to report on airship use in the navy while Major General Leonard Wood and Major George O. Squiers plan to brief Congress on a $500,000 aeronautics appropriation for the army.
